METAL-BENDING- MACHINE.
essary that a simple, efficient and easily op-- erated metal-bending mechanism be had to facilitate the work of such construction. lVith this end in view the present device,
which combines simplicity, durability, com-- pactness and cheapness of construction with ease and rapidity of operation, has been invented.
The following description, read in con nection with the accompanying drawings, will enable persons skilled in the art to which my invention relates to understand and to practice my invention in the form in which I employ it; but it will be understood that my invention is not limited to the precise form and details of construction herein illustrated and described, as the same may be changed or modified in various particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the claims.
Referring to said drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of my device, with the duplicate right-hand portion cut away, showing a metal rod bent therein. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, in broken detail, of the adjustable arm. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the bar clamping member. Fig. 4c is an end elevation of the swivel member through which the brace for the adjustable arm passes. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the brace for the adjustable arm showing a plan view of the pivoting end in broken detail.
Referring to said drawings by numerals: suitably spaced guide members 1, of any preferred form but more properly of channel iron as here shown, are adapted to be mounted upon any suitable support or table and secured thereto by means of bolts 2. Said guide members are held or braced by stiffening plates 3 secured thereto in any suitable manner but preferably, as here Specification of Letters Patent.

shown, by means of bolts or rivets. Slidably mounted upon said guide members 1 is the bar engaging member 4 formed in any suitable manner but by preference, as here shown, it consists of a section of channeliron provided with a slot 5 for the reception of the bar to be bent. Said member 4: is mounted upon plates 6, to which it is' secured in any suitable manner, for the purpose of elevating the same sufliciently to allow the bar to ride in the slot 5; and is further provided with plate 7 adapted to fit between the, guide members 1 and act as a guide for-said member 4 in its adjustment and also as a brace during the operation of bending. Member 4:, plates 6 and plate 7 are provided with recesses in alinement for the reception of the threaded bolt 8. Bolt 8 carries clamping member 9, shown most clearly in Fig. 3, which is held in position upon said bolt by any suitable means but preferably by the wing-nut 10. As will be understood, the upwardly turned ends of clamping member 9 are adapted to engage and bear upon the inner surfaces of the downwardly extending or flange portion of the guide members 1. It will be readily understood that the bar clamping member 4. may be swiveled to permit of greater range in the angle of bending and also that, instead of being slid back and forth by hand, its position may be changed by means of screw or other mechanism. The same applies to the other movable parts, but one preferred form being here shown. An adjustable arm 11, provided with a longitudinal slot 12 throughout the greater portion of its length and terminating at one end in an oifset portion 13 said portion being provided with a bar receiving slot, is mounted upon said guide members 1. A screw bolt 14: passes through the aforesaid slot 12 andis provided at its head with a washer 15 to engage said arm 11. A clamping member 16 carrying above it a rectangular member 17 is carried by said bolt and held in position thereon by any suitable means but preferably by the wing-nut 18. Pivoted to said arm 11, near the ofiset end thereof, is a brace bar 19 adapted to pass through the recess in an eye-bolt 20 slidably mounted between the aforesaid guide-members 1. Said eye-bolt 20 carries thereon a rectangular guide member 21- and a clamping member 22 held in position thereon by any suitable means but preferably by a wing nut- 23. It will be readily understood that the action of the clamping members 16 and 22 is the same as that described for the clamping member 9.
As has been said, other arrangements of my device could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as, for instance, the adjustable arm 11 could be placed beneath the bar retaining member 4 with good results, so also other means for sliding the parts to new positions could be used, likewise screw operated mechanism, lever operated cams or other means may be employed for causing the bend without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
To practice my invention, the parts being set for the desired bends the bar to be bent is placed in the slot of member 4, a section of pipe is then slipped over the bar and brought to a point near where the bar enters the slot, force is then applied until the bar has been bent to the desired angle. lVhen a further bend is required the section of pipe is slipped back out of the way and the bar allowed to rest'in the slot of the offset portion 13 of arm 11, when a further bend may be made in the same manner at this point. So, by varying the positions of the different members, it will be seen that any desired angle may be formed at any point on the bar.
Having described my invent-ion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

In a metal bending machine, a suitable base, guide members mounted upon said base, a bar retaining member, supporting means mounted upon said guide members beneath said retaining member and clamping mechanism carried by said retaining member for clamping the same in any position upon said guide members.
