Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 7, 1912. Serial No. 713,861.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SIMON B. MINNICI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Landisville, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressing-Jacks, of which the following is a spedification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in that class of inventions commonly known under the title of jacks, and more particularly to that class adapted for use in pressing or casing tobacco; the same being of such construction that it can be transported as desired along the track from which it is suspended.
One object of this invention is the pro vision of a jack such as described, in which a means is provided for locking and releasing the main lifting bar.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a jack of such construction that all friction will be eliminated upon the op cration of the lifting bar.
Still another object of this invention is the provision of an efficient gripping means for engaging the lifting bar and holding the same against any undesired movement.
A further object of this invention is the provision of means to regulate the position of the gripping jaws or links relative to each other.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a jack of the nature described which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2, is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3, is a fragmentary view illustrating the connection between the bars and the anti-friction rollers. Fig. 41 is a detail horizontal sectional view showing the anti-friction rollers in plan. Fig. 5, is a similar view showing the friction blocks in plan. Fig. 6, a fragmentary view showing the base and extension plates.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by similar reference characters, the numeral 10, designates generally my improved pressing jack, which is mounted for longitudinal movement upon a track 11, which is suspended from the beam or rafter 12, of a building.
The carriage 13, comprises a bar 1 1, from the opposite ends of which extend arms 15, which carry journaled thereon the rollers 16, arranged to engage the supporting flanges 17, which extend longitudinally of the tracks in the same horizontal planes. A stationary lifting bar 18, is secured to the under side of the carriage 13, by angle brackets 19, while slidable upon this bar 18, is a lower or movable hollow lifting bar 20. which is formed from opposite side and end plates 21, and 22, connected in any suitable manner, such as shown at 23. The bars 18, and 20, may be either round, oval, square or oblong in cross section.
A base plate or presser head 24:, is secured to the lower end of the bar 20, by angle brackets 25, and has hinged to its opposite ends extension plates 26, which have secured to their upper sides, brackets 27, to the free ends of which are connected inwardly projecting links 28, which are pivoted to a strap 29, at their inner ends, which strap is arranged to surround the bar 20, and prevent the upward swinging movement of the said plates 26. This strap can be operated by a lever 30, to lock or release the links 28.
Supporting brackets or bars 31, are secured to the side plates 21, of the bars 20, intermediate the ends thereof, and have pivoted between their opposite ends, a link 82, and a main operating lever 33. The former has its upper end pivoted between a pair of swivel block gripping jaws or links 34; while the latter has its inner extended terminal pivoted to a link 35, which is in turn pivoted between the adjacent ends of the upper gripping jaws or links The jaws or links 341, and 36, are constructed with swivel blocks 37, which engage the opposite edges of the bar 18; while, in order to hold these upper and lower jaws spaced apart to prevent any binding, set screws 38, are adjustably threaded in the under sides of the upper swivel block gripping jaws 34, to engage the upper sides of the lower swivel block gripping jaws 36.
In order to release thej aws and place them in such position as to release the grip of the swivel blocks allowing movement between the bars 18, and 20, a supplemental lever 39, is pivoted to a bracket 40, secured to the lower end of the said bar 20, and this lever is connected by a link 41, to the free ends of the swivel block gripping jaws 34; while in order to prevent friction between these bars 18, and 20, longitudinal and transverse rollers 42, and 43, are journaled in the bar 20, to engage the bar 18 and similar rollers 44, and 45, are journaled in the bar 18, to engage the inner sides of the bar 20.
Bars 46 are secured to the plates 21, above the bars 31, and secured to these bars 46 are upwardly extending brackets 47, and forwardly extending spring clips 48, arranged in the path of the lever 33, to retain the same in its upper position. Cables 49, are secured to the upper ends of the brackets 47, and pass over pulleys 50, mounted upon the carriage, and then downwardly to a U- shaped counter-weight 51, arranged to partially surround the bars 18, and 20, and the operating mechanism and permit of the free movement of the lever 33. In using the jack, the same is moved to the proper position relative to the track 11, and the lever 39, operated to release the bar 20. Upon the proper movement of the le ver 33, the bar 20, will be moved vertically in a downward direction which forces the presser head 24, into operative engagement with the tobacco case, not shown in the drawing. lVhen it is desired to release the bars 18, and sleeve 20, the lever 39, is forced to such position as will cause the blocks 34, to assume a position at right angles to the bar 18, to release the same.
When the operator is through using the jack, the same can be telescoped upwardly out of the way, in which position it can be held bythe counter-weight 51.
It should be understood in this connection.
that various minor changes in the details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying draw- 50 ings, it will be manifest that a jack of the class described is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination in a jack of a pair of movable bars, links pivotedv to one of said bars, swivel block gripping jaws carried by the links and engaging the other of the bars, a main lever attached to one of the links to operate one set of swivel block gripping aws for moving one bar, an unlocking lever attached to one of the bars and a link connecting and operating the other set of gripping jaws.
2. The combination in a jack of a pair of telescoping bars, means for locking said bars, a lever operatively connected to one of the bars for moving the same, and spring clips attached to one of the bars in the path of the lever for engaging the same and holding it in one position.
3. The combination in a jack of a pair of movable telescoping bars, swivel .gripping jaws engaging the lifting bar, said jaws being arranged in spaced pairs, means for operating the jaws to lock the bars against movement and for moving the same, and set screws threaded in one pair of jaws to en gage the other pair of jaws and retaining them in spaced relation.
4. The combination in a jack of a pair of movable telescoping bars, means for operats5 ing the same, a presser head secured to one of the bars, plates hinged to the ends of the presser head, brackets secured to the plates, links pivoted to the brackets, a strap sur rounding one of the bars and pivoted to the links, and a lever attached to the strap for operating the same.
