Description

J. SGHWILLING. soArPoLn JACK. APPLICATION FILED JULY 6, 1908.

JACOB SOHWILLING, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS.
SOAFFOLD-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 6, 1908. Serial No. 442,056.
Patented March 16, 1909.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAcoB SOHWILLING, citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffold-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in scaffold jacks.
The object of the invention is to provide a scaffold jack or bracket of simple construction which may be readily adjusted and fastened in position and also in the provision of an adjustable platform.
Finally the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable and efficient, and simple and comparatively inexpensive to produce, also one in which the several parts will not be liable to get out of working order.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, an example of which is described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a window or door frame showing my jack in position, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the platform and a portion of the post.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a hollow center post or standard having its lower end split and receiving a telescoping rod 2 having a point 3 on its lower end engaging in the base 4 of the frame 5 as shown in Fig. 1. A split collar 6 carried on the lower end of the post is employed to clamp the split portion of the post about the rod, which it is understood is adjusted to the proper point.
A bracket 7 secured on the upper end of the post receives at substantially right angles to the post a flat bar 8. A strip 9 having a frame engaging point 10 is provided with a plurality of bolt holes 11 and through two or more of which bolts 12 are passed into the bar 8. In this way the strip may be adjusted longitudinally of the bar and transversely of the frame, as it is merely necessary to disengage the bolts and insert them in the other bolt holes. On the opposite end of the bar a plunger 13 having a frame engaging point 14 is mounted to slide. The
plunger lies under the bar being supported thereon by lips 15 bent from the plunger about the bar so as to permit the plunger to slide.
An car 16 projecting from the side of the bar 8 pivotally receives a bifurcated lever 17 the furcations of which have pivoted connection with links 18 connected at their forward ends to a bolt 19. This bolt 19 is assed tightly through the plunger, but wor s in a slot 20 in the bar 8. By swinging the lever 17, the plunger 13 is moved transversely of the jack, so that after the strip 9 has been adjusted and the lever swung out, it is only necessary to swing the lever inward against the bar 8 to drive the points 10 and 14 into the frame 5 and lock the jack in position.
A hinged clamp 21 is mounted on the posts 1 and has a bracket arm 22 extending from one side. This arm receives a platform 23 on which the workman may stand. It is evident that the platform may thus be swung to about the post and adjusted to any desired height and a simple jack readily adjusted and fastened in position is provided. For locking the plunger in its extended position provision is made in the bar and plunger to receive a headed pin 24 which may be dropped in place to lock the parts against movement.
What I claim, is:
1. In a scaffold jack, an adjustable post, a frame engaging bar, means for fastening the bar in a frame, and an adjustable platform mounted on the post.
2. In a scaffold jack, an adjustable post, a bar mounted on the post, a frame engaging device mounted on the bar, a frame engaging plunger mounted on the other end of the bar, and an adjustable platform mounted on the post.
3. In a scaffold jack, an adjustable post, a bar mounted on the post, a frame engaging device provided on one end of the bar, a frame engaging plunger mounted to slide on the bar, means for operating said plunger and holding the plunger in position, and an adjustable platform mounted on the post.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB SOHWILLING.
