Beit known that I, GEORGE BENJAMIN -ED- GAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented-.a jnew and useful Car-Seal, of which the following is a specification. r
This invention relates to an improved seallock for sealing car-doors, boxes, shippingcrates, &c., and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character which may be quickly applied to the ordinary form of car-door without necessitating any change in the construction of the hasp or staple and when once locked in position renders it impossible to open the door without breaking or btherwise destroying the seal. A further object of the invention is to provide a frangible seal by means of -which any attempt to effect an entrance to the car will be indicated and which when unsealed or broken cannot be restored to its normal condition or partially restored, so as to avoid de-` tection. y
The invention consists in a seal formed of frangible material provided with a longituy dinally-disposed slot or opening for the'recep-4 tion of the staple, the seal being heldin contact with and locked against the hasp by means of a bearded pin, which enters anap` erture formed in the top of the seal and passes through the staple, the'end of the pin being iirmly embedded in the body of the seal, thereby preventing the pin being withdrawn and the car-door opened without shattering the seal.
The invention further consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the "accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a car door and frame with my improved seal-lock applied thereto, the door being shown in the closed position. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the seal and lockingpin. Fig. 3 is avertical sectional view of the seal, and Fig. Il is a similar View showing the pin or key embedded in the body of the seal.

A'designates a car-door, to which is pivoted `or-otherwise secureda hasp B, the end of which engages a staple C, fastened in any suitable manner to the frame of the car. The
-seal consists of a substantially rectangular block. 6, formed of clay, pottery, or other frangible material, the rear side of which is serrated or otherwise weakened, as shown at 7. The block is provided with a longitudinally-disposed opening 8, adapted to receive the staple C, and extending through the top of the seal and communicating with the opening 8 is a vertically-disposed opening 9, through which passes a pin or key 10. The pin 10 is substantially rectangular in cross-section, and its angular faces are bearded or barbed, as shown, defining a series of radially-projecting resilient spurs Vor anchoring-teeth 11, adapted to engage the interior walls of an opening or key-seat 12 in the body of the seal. opening 12 is formed in the block G coincident with the `opening 9, the diameter of which is slightly less than that of the pin or key, so
that'when said pin is driven in place the resilientspurs or anchoring-teeth 11 will ena gage the interior walls of the opening 12, and `any attempt to withdraw the pin will canse the teeth to firmly embed themselves in the clay or other material of which the seal is formed, as clearlyillustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

It will be apparent from the foregoing de IOC scription that I have produced a seal-lock that is simple in construction and eective in operation, which requires no change in the staple or hasp now in use, and as there is no means by which an entrance to the car can be effected Without breaking the frangible seal it is evident that if the car is entered the broken seal would indicate the depredation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A seal-lock comprising a frangible body portion provided with a staple-receiving opening and havinga pair of alined key-receiving openings, and a key adapted to said openings and provided with projections for engaging the Walls thereof.
2. A seal-lock comprising a-frangible body portion provided With openings disposed at an angle to each other and adapted one for the passage of a locking member and the other for the reception of a locking-key, and a locking-key having resilient barbs or beards for engagement with the Walls of said opening.
3. A seal-lock comprising a frangible body having on one face a plurality of grooves and provided with openings disposed at an angle to each other and adapted one for the pasa sage of a locking member and the other for the reception of a locking-key, the key-receiving opening having smooth interior Walls, and a locking-key having resilient barbs or beards for engaging said Walls.
4. A seal-lock comprising a frangible body portion provided with a staple-receiving opening and coincident pin or key-receiving openings, a key provided With projecting resilient teeth iitting within the openings, one of said openings forming a key-seat and being of a diameter less than the key.
5. As an article of manufacture a seal-lock comprising a frangible body portion provided with weakening-grooves and a staple-receiving opening, vertically-disposed coincident key-receiving openings formed in the body portion anda locking pin or key adapted to enter said openings.
