PATENT OFFICE.
LEMUEL PATTERSON, O F WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO RICHARD W. LAVERY, OF WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA.
lvlAlLlrfJG-TUBE.
SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent N0..728,407, dated May-19, 1903. y
` A Application filed March 31, 1902. Serial No. 100,715. (No model.) l
To all whom t may concern: j
Be it known that I,k LEMUEL PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Warren, county of Warren, and'State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mailing-Tubes, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar lletters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to mailing-tubes, the object thereof being to provide a device of this characterk which is susceptible of carrying rolled paper, light' merchandise, legal documents, and other articles of a character adapted to be transported and which so se- In the accompanying drawings, form-ing `part 'of this specication, Figure l is a perspective view of myimproved tube, showing the same in open position; Fig. 2, a side elevation showing the device closed, and Fig. o is an end view.
In the practice of my invention I employ.
two semicylindrical sections or parts A A', which are compcsedof pasteboard, com pressed fiber, or any suitable material of sufficient durability to stand the strain of wear and tear incidental to transportation through the mails. The device is preferably circular in cross-section but octagonal, square, or other forms may be employed, if desirable. These sections are each provided at -their end parts with heads@ tt, which have integral flanges a2 as for strengthening them and which are glued or otherwise fastened to the inner walls of the device.
The parts A A are hinged to each other by means of a strip of fabric B, which is glued 'to the periphery of the device along two of its abutting or contiguous edges, whereby the structure may be readily opened and closed. As a means for closing the device I fasten by the use of mucilageor glue to the edge part of one section, as A', opposite its hinged edge, a paper strip O,W hich has vanA inner coating c of 'mucilageor gum, adapted when moistenedto adhere to the outside part of the other section of the device, as A, when the same is closed. The mucilaged part is only on the two longitudinal edgesof this strip, whereby the adjacent edge parts of the tubesections are kept clean. Y d
Permanently fastened to one end of the section A by means of the loop d, which passes through the material forming the wall of the device and the jlang'e of one of its end heads, is the cord or wire D, which is employed as a means for opening the device.
'Ihis cord when the device is closed rests snugly within a shallow groove ct, formed in the wall A, thuswpermitting Athe strip Ol to smoothly contact'with the 4'surfaces of the adjacent sections tomaintain secure connection of the two parts of the device without producing a ridge where the cord is located, thus permitting this strip to be employed as a means for carrying an address, if desirable.
In the operation and use of the invention `the mattei' to be transported is placed within the section A.' `The section A is then closed over thereon, moisture being applied tothe gummed surface of the strip O, and the same is fastened to the surface of the section A, with the cord within the groove a4. To open the-package, it is simply necessary to grasp the free end of the cord D and pull outwardly thereon until the strip C is severed, whereupon the package may readily be opened. Should it be desirable to reuse the tube, 'it is simply necessary to supply a new strip O, gummed along two of its edges. ThusI supply a vdurable and efficient mailing-tube which can be used a number of times and which is so constructed as to thoroughly protect its contents. e
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a mailing-tube, the combination with the two semicylindrical halves-A and A', one of which is indented with a shallow groove a4, near one of its edges, and means for connecting said halves together, of the heads a.
and a', in the ends 0E said halves, and the my uventonhave signed myname, in presflanges a2, and 51,3, raised on and integral with ence of two Witnesses, this 15th day of March, said heads, strengthening them and afford- 1902.
