SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,577, dated Sleptember 22 1885 Application filed February 6, 1885. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, RUFUS S. MERRILL, of Boston, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Boxes,of which the following is a specification.

The folding box in which my improvement is comprised has sides which fold flat upon one another, and hinged flaps which close the ends of the box. I make these end flaps with hinged extensions, which, when the flaps are folded to place, fold down upon one and the same side of the box, and are of such length that they preferably meet and overlap one another. The box-body itself is virtually a compound box or an assemblage of boxes, all of which together form the body of the box,

i and are so constructed and arranged that the latter can fold flat without disturbing the relations of its component parts. The box is intended for the packing and transporting of bottles and the like, which must be kept sepa rate from and out of contact with one another to prevent breakage.

The compound box or package represented is one intended to hold two liquor-flasks. To this end it should consist, virtually, of two distinct boxes or compartments, which, while adapted to fold and unfold as one, will nevertheless hold the article contained in the one separate from and out of contact with the other. The preferred way of accomplishing this result is indicated in the drawings.

One side of the box-body is formed by a strip, A, having the hinged flaps a and hinged extensions 12, formed,preferably, by making the strip of a proper length and then scoring or creasing it along the proper lines of fold of the flaps and extensions. The other three sides,

obtain the four outer walls and the two end 1 flaps, &c., of the compound box.

The division of this compound box into two separate compartments is effected in this i nstance by a longitudinal partition-strip, E, ex-

tending between and attached permanently to 6 two opposite sides-in this instance the sides A Oand parallel with and equidistant from the other two sides, B D. This partitionstrip is hinged-to sides A C, so that it will fold and unfold with the remaining parts of the fold- 6 ing boxbody. For this purpose it is attached to the sides A C by tongues d, formed by areas ing or scoring at proper points the strip from which the partition is made, the hinges of the partition thus being at the creases or scores 7c between it and the tongues.

In this way I obtain a compound box made up of a number of distinct boxes or compart- A ments'which fold and unfold as one. It is shown in flattened condition in Figs. 3 and 4.

When the box is unfolded and closed, the extensions 1), by overlapping one another, are brought to a position where they are readily secured and held in place by the cord 6, used to tie up the box. This arrangement serves to materially strengthen the box as well as to stiffen it.

Having described my improvement and the best way now known to me of carrying it into effect, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A compound folding box having a body composed of the strip A, having hinged end flaps, a b, and the creased strip B O D, in combination with the hinged partition E, substan- 9o tially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
