' ENVELOP AND \NRlT'lNG-SHEET- SPECIFICAIIONfQrming part of Letters Patent No. 725,459, dated April 14, 1903.
Application filed October 10, 1902.
To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that we, A BERT H. LEWIS, JAMES 0.. SHIELnsand ALBERT G. QUIMBY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Uhrichsville, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Envelops and'Writi'n'g-Sheets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. I
This invention. relates to certain newand useful improvements in combined envelops and writing-sheets,'and the primary object thereof is to providea device of this type which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture. 1 r
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for. securely fastening the several flaps in-their foldedpositions.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in'the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of-parts to be hereinafter more fullydescribed.
. In describing the invention in detail refer ence is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in
which-- Figure 1 is aplan view of the blank consti tuting the presentinvention. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing twoofthe side flaps in afolded position. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the end flaps secured in position upon the side flaps. Fig. 4 is a planview of the front side of the invention, showing the securing tongue secured thereto. Fig. 5 is a rear View of the same. Fig. 6 is aviewsimilar to Fig. 5 with the securing tongue inserted in position. Fig. 7 is a similar view of the complete article. 1 indicates the body or envelop portion of the present invention, Zand 3 the end flaps,
and 4:, 5, and 6 the side flaps. By reference to Fig. 1 it will be observedthat the side" flaps 4, 5, and 6 and body portion 1 constitute the letter-sheet and thatafter the letter has been written thereon the flaps at and 5 are folded upon the body portion 1, as indicated in Figl 2. The end flap 3 is then folded upon the side flaps 4 and 5', which end fiapis provided with a transversely-arranged slit 7 to Serial No. 126,740. (No specimens.)
receive the tongue 8 of the opposite end flap 2, v I which is folded upon theend flap 3, as indi-' cated in Fig. 3 of the-drawings.
wedge-shaped extension, as' shown in Fig. 3,
preventing the withdrawal of the tongue'8. After the end flaps 2 and 3 have been folded upon the side flaps 4] and 5 a'nd secured, as heretofore described, the other side flap, 6,
which constitutes the other side of the en velop portion of the blank, is then folded over the end flaps, as indicatedin Figs.,4 and 5,
-and the extension 10 thereof inserted through the slits 11 and 12 of the body portion 1. 1
This extension 10 is also provided with triangularfiaps 13, which afterhavi ngbee n inserted through the slot 12 are unfolded, as .shown in of the triangular flaps, and when it is de sired to openthe combined envelop'and let-- ter-sheet the said flaps can be readily folded into their original position by means ofa Fig. 7, and the extension severed from the I hair-pin or other small article, thereby'per- I mitting the withdrawal of the tongue 8 and extension 10, respectively, without mutilating the same. not desired to further use the device'the latter can be readily opened by severing the flap 6from the1ine15."
.It will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having fully described ourinvention, what on the'other hand, if it is we claim as new, and desire' to securebyLet- 'ters Patent, is
1. In a combined letter-sheet and envelop, a body portion havinga pair of slits therein, a pair of end flaps secured to the said body por'tion,.o'ne of said end flaps having a slit formed therein, a securing-tongue carried by the other end flap, triangular flaps carried by the sides of said tongue, said flaps secured to the said body portion, andan extension carried by one ofthe said side flaps and received in the slits in the said body portion, substantially as described.
2. In a combined letter-sheet and envelop a body portion having a pair of slits therein, said slits being spaced apart, end flaps, one of said end flaps having formed therein a slit, a securing-tongue carried by the other end flap, triangular flaps carried by the said securing-tongue, side flaps, an extension secured to one of said side flaps and received in slits in said body portion, and triangular flaps carried by said extension, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signal5 tures in the presence of two Witnesses.
