HENRY POWLES, SR., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SPOON-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpartof Letters Patent No. 723,729, dated March 24, 1903.
Application filed June 2, 1902. Serial No. 109,878. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY PoWLEs, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spoon-Holders, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of this invention are to provide an improved spoon-holder for use on tables in dining-rooms'in ships or steamboats, hotels, restaurants, and similar places and which may also be used as a displaying device in stores and other places; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a spoon-holder constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a spoon-holder made according to my invention and showing a number of spoons nested therein, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the holder.
In the practice of my invention I provide a spoon-holder which comprises a horizontal plate or base member a, which may be of any desired form or configuration and may be ornamented in any desired manner, and this base member is oblong and provided adj acent' to one end with an upright forked member Z), comprising a standard 19*, which may be formed integrally with or connected with the base a in any desired manner, the said standard being provided with vertically-arranged side arms b the same being preferably parallel. The height of the standard b is intended to be such that when spoons E are supported in the holder their handles will be practically horizontal.
Adjacent to the end ofthe base at opposite the forked member I) is another upright member c, which is curved in cross-section, the front thereof being provided with a verticallyarranged groove 0 adapted to receive the points of the spoons, and said member 0 is preferably slightly inclined backwardly. The
cave portion or groove 0 of the member 0,
the bowl portion of the bottom spoon resting in the cavity or recess cl.
It will be seen that the fork b cavity d, and grooved member 0 combine in preventing lateral movement of. the spoons and that the cavity at prevents endwise movement in the direction of the handles, while the member o prevents it in the other direction. Thus the spoons are held immovably even when being transported from'place to place or during the rocking of a ship, yet they may be readily removed together or one at a time, as required for use. The general conformation' of the vertical member 0 transversely to the shape of the ends of the spoon-bowls is important to the above-stated functions and at the same time avoidsany material injury to the edges of the bowls.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved spoon-holder comprising the horizontal base having a cavity as described, the vertical forked member having parallel arms, and the vertical member 0 curved transversely throughout its length, in gen eral conformity with the shape of points of spoon-b0 wls, the two members being arranged on opposite sides of said cavity and in alinement therewith, as shown and described for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 31st day of May, 1902.
