NITED TATES PATENT OFFICE.
THADDEUS SOBIESKI OOFFIN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FlNGER-RlNG TRAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,018, dated October .27, 1885,
Application filed March 3, 1884. Serial No. 122,778. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THADDEUS SoBIEsKI OOFFIN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Finger-Ring Trays or Boxes and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view, and Fig. 2 a transverse section, of ring tray orholder provided with my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claims hereinafter presented. Fig. 3 is a front view of a tray with finger-rings applied to and sustained by its catches.
This ring-tray consists of a box, A, having within it a wooden plate, B, covered with silk, velvet, or plush, or other suitable material. In this plate there is arranged one or more clamps, 0, each, as represented, being a plate of metal, bent as shown, and adapted to slide vertically in the plate B through an aperture or slot, a, therein, one horizontal portion, 2), of the catch beingabove and the other, a, being below the said plate B, and the vertical part d being in the slot a, as represented. The part c is adapted to slide vertically upon the legs of a staple, d, inserted through such part and into the plate B, a spiralspring, D, being arranged between the said part c and plate B, and to bear against both. The part I), covered with velvet, plush, or other proper material, projects over the velvet or cloth covering of the plate B, the whole being to hold a fingenring when arranged in manner as shown at K in the drawings, such ring standing vertically and being inserted between the plate B or its covering and the upper part, b, of the catch.
1- do not claim a finger-ring tray or box having one or more recesses or pockets to receive one or more rings, such recesses or pockets, when the tray or box may be provided wit-h a series of them, generally differing in size, to enable them to hold rings differing in their sizes; nor do I claim a finger-ring-holding tray constructed as represented in the United States Patent No. 134,898, in which tray each catch is simply a wire spring attached at one end to the tray, for with a spring-catch of such description it is very difficult, if not impossible, to hold a ring or keep it held in an upright position.
With my improved tray or box or holder a finger-ring of any ordinary size can be held by any of the clamps, and be sustained thereby in a position at right angles with the tray.
I therefore claim- 1. The combination of a plate or board, and a covering thereof of cloth or velvet, with a series of plate-metal clamps inserted and movable in openings of the board, and turned or bent down over such covering, so as to present flat bearings or hooks to enter and hold finger-rings upon it, the said covering, and also extended below and under the board, and provided with springs for depressing them, all being substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a plate, B, covered with velvet or other suitable material, with the clamp G, and its operative spring and guide-staple, arranged and to operate with such covered plate and a finger-ring, substantially in manner as represented.
THADDEUS SOBIESKI GOFFIN.
