Description
(No Model.) 2 Sheets-Sheet 1. 0. F EDDY. EGG CASE.
No. 430,227. Patented June 17, 1890.
UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. A. EDDY, OF GREENFIELD, ASSIGNOR TO THE GARDNER EGG CARRIER COMPANY, OF WEST GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS.
EGG-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,227, dated June 17, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs F. A. EDDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Egg- Packing Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which in connection with the drawings making a part of this specification, will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to -make and use the same.
My invention relates to egg-packing cases consisting of individual egg-holders and the closed case with which said holders are combined.
The object of my invention is to provide means for the transportation and shipment of eggs in large numbers without any danger of breakage; and my invention consists in certain novel features of construction of eggpacking cases, and more particularly in combining egg-holders, provided with devices for holding and supporting each egg, with an inclosed case, in which the egg-holders are placed and secured, and from which the eggholders can be easily withdrawmwhen desired, without destroying the case, and the case and egg-holders again used when desired.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved egg-packing case with the movable side removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section showing the movable side partially opened and one of the egg-holders partially drawn out from the case, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the egg-holders detached.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 is the box or case, preferably made of wood, of the shape shown in cross-section, Fig. 2. Said case 1 is preferably provided with a central division 2, dividing it into two equal parts. The front side 3 of said case is hinged at its upper edge, as shown at 4, Fig. 2, and provided with a staple 5 or other device at its lower part for engagement with the hasp 6, secured upon the lower side of the case 1 to hold the side 3 closed when it is shut down.
The case 2 has horizontal slots 7 formed in Application filed April 12, 1890- Serial No. 347,607. (No model.)
the ends thereof, and also in the central division 2 at regular distances apart.
The egg-holders proper, which are combined with the case 1, are an improvement upon the egg-holders as patented to me April 16, 1889, and consist of a series of longitudinal bars 8, held in place and secured together at their outer ends by the cross-bars 9, which extend across the bars 8 just inside the ends of said bars, so as to leave the ends projecting out slightly beyond said bars.
The bars 8 are provided with slots or grooves 10 (see Fig. 2) in their contiguous edges, into which extend the ends of the Wire loops 11.
A pair of wire loops 11 is provided for each egg, which is supported between the said loops.
The egg-holders consisting of the bars 8 and cross-bars 9, provided with the wire loops 11, are combined with the case 1 by inserting the projecting ends 8 of the bars Sin the slots 7 in the ends and central division of said case, said slots 11 being made sufficiently large, so that the ends 8' of the bars 8 will slide freely therein, and the egg-holders may 7 5 be readily withdrawn from the case 1, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be understood that the case 1 may be made single instead of double, as shown in Fig. 1, and may be made of any desired size and shape, and the slots 7 may be made by means of two horizontal strips extending within the case, and the egg-holders may be made of any desired size and shape corresponding to the size and shape of the case with which they are combined.
I am aware that prior to my invention a patent has been granted for an egg-packing case consisting of a case and individual egg trays or holders combined therewith, and 0 therefore I do not, broadly, claim the same,
but limit this application to the combination,
with a case, of individual egg holders or trays of my special and improved construction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In an egg-case, the combination, with case 1, provided with horizontal grooves 7 therein, and a movable side 3, of the improved egg- Ioo holder consisting of individual bars 8, ex- I extend into the slots 7 in the case 1',substantending in the direction of the length of the tially as set forth.
ceive the lower ends of the Wire loops 11 and SAMUEL PARKER, J12,
the projecting ends of the bars 8, adapted to CHAS. N. PAYNE.
