To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ACOB F. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massillon, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a pocket-block for a cabinet for holding and indexing many kinds of labels so that a label of any one kind can be readily withdrawn from its particular pocket; and the object of the improvement is to construct and form the block so that the side wall of one block forms a partition separating the pocket thereof from the pocket of an adjoining block when the blocks are assembled in a cabinet, and also forms an abutment against which the labels may be inserted in the pocket of the one block through the open side thereof when the block is removed from the cabinet. This object, with other ancillary advantages, is attained by the construction and arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet containing a series of upright pocket-blocks, and also a drawer containing a series of prone pocket-blocks; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the cabinet through the upright blocks; Fig. 3, a detached perspective view of a one-pocket block; and Fig. 4:, a detached perspective view of a two-pocket block.

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.

The blocks 1 or l are provided with one or more label pockets, the bottoms 2 of which pockets are longitudinally arched or convexed, the ends 3 of which are preferably formed parallel and perpendicular to the general plane of the pockets, and are provided with the arched flanges 4 overhanging the end portions of the pockets, the upper faces of which flanges are preferably formed fiat and in the same plane and are adapted to receive the index 5 designating the labels in the particular pocket.

One side of each pocket is completely closed by the wall 6 which serves as a partition to separate the pockets of laterally adjoining blocks, when the same are assembled in the cabinet; and the other side of each pocket is formed open, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The blocks are assembled in the cabinet end to end andside by side in such numbers as may be desired, and, as shown in the drawings, the upright section of the cabinet is filled with two-pocket blocks below and one-pocket blocks above.

For inserting a pack of labels in a pocket, the block is removed from the cabinet by merel withdrawing it directly outward therefrom, and a suitable number of labels, being uniformly arranged in a pack, are then flexed with the gummed surfaces on the convex side; in which relation of the parts the pack is inserted laterally through the open side of the pocket, and the labels are pushed in against the wall closure of the other side of the pocket, whereupon the ends of the labels spring against the ends of the pockets and are normally retained therein by the resilience of the labels and the overhanging flanges. The block is then inserted in its proper place in the cabinet, and the side wall of each pocket forms a closure for the open side of the next adjoining pocket; and, in this arrangement of the parts, the label lying on the top of the pack can be readily removed by moistening the finger, if necessary, and inserting it through the interval between the edges 7 of the overhanging end fianges to contact with the gummed surface of the label, preferably near the end thereof and under one of the overhanging flanges; whereupon the label may be withdrawn by the adhesion of the label to the finger.

Having in mind the intangible character of gummed labels caused by their tendency to curl, it is evident that the block-pockets formed with one side closed and the other side open permits apack of labels to be readily inserted and properly lodged in the pocket through the open side against the wall closure of the other side; and that when the blocks are assembled each pocket is isolated from another without requiring any partitions to be provided in the cabinet.
