(Cl. 223-107) This invention is a new and improved kit for holding the many different types and sizes of knitting needles, crochet hooks, sewing and darning needles, bobbins, gauges, measuring devices, and other accessories, used by persons who work extensively in yarn and thread.

The primary purpose of the invention is to provide a kit in which the above mentioned variety of equipment may be kept in a compact, orderly manner and in good condition for quick and easy selection, withdrawal, and replacement of one or more implements, and with little or no disturbance or disarrangement of the remainder of the contents of the kit.

Other objects of the invention are to simplify and reduce cost of manufacture and at the same time improve and strengthen the construction of kits or cases of the class to which the invention pertains.

Other objects and advantages will appear as I proceed to describe an embodiment of the invention in detail by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein like parts are designated by like reference characters in the several views.

FIGURE 3 is a detail in perspective of a pin and needle cushion incorporated in the kit, the region of the detail being indicated by the line 33 of FIGURE 1; and

FIGURE 4 is a fragmetary perspective view of the lid and divider frame assembled therein, the plane of horizontal section being indicated by the line 4-4 of FIGURE 1.

The kit comprises a perspective view of the kit with the the knitting needle rack in upright top planview of the knitting needle body 1 and a lid 2. The body is made up of a bottom wall 3, a front wall 4, a rear wall 5 and end walls 6 and 7. The lid 2 is constructed of corresponding parts, to wit: a top wall 10, front wall 11,

one of which is indicated at in FIGURE 1. Cooperating hasps 18 and staples 19 are carried, respectively, by the front walls of the lid and body, respectively, for holding the latter in closed position, and a handle 20 is secured to the front wall of the body for use in carrying the kit. To better guard against surface of each, the wall 3 and the wall 10, a layer of felt or similar fabric indicated, generally, by the respective reference characters 3a and 10a.

Glued or otherwise secured within the body 1 as indicated at 6:1 and 7a is a divider generally designated 25. This divider is preferably made of plastic and die cast as an integral unit, It comprises a peripheral wall a,

arranged partitions 26, 27, 28 and 29.

One relatively large compartment A accommodates a knitting needle rack 30. This rack is composed of end walls 31, a top wall 32, a bottom wall 33 desirably 3,322,310 Patented May 30, 1967 covered with felt or the like, as designated at 33aand an intermediate wall 34. Rising a short distance above the bottom wall, along each lateral edge thereof, is a side wall 35. One such wall appears in FIGURE 1. The top and intermediate walls are provided with two groups of holes, those of one wall being in axial alignment with the corresponding holes of the other wall. The holes of each group are graduated in diameter size and are arranged in pairs to receive pairs of knitting needles, and the needles that occupy the holes 37 of the right hand group, as the rack is viewed in FIGURE 1, are consider ably longer than the needles that occupy the holes 36 of the left hand group. Thus, there are two groups or approximately of the same length, respectively.

A cross-partition 38 of the divider 25 sets oif a comheight with the peripheral wall of the divider, extends across the compartment A. While this paitition 39 thus defines one side of a shallow ment A, they serve as a closure for Crochet hooks of different lengths, double-point knitting needles, may be accommodated by shown in FIGURE 3.

Fitting within the lid 2 is a divider 45 comprising a of compartments G, and the bottom portion of the lower (row, are overhung, respectively, .by flanges 50 and 51. All of the above mentioned components of the divider 45 are integral parts of a plastic die casting, so far as my present preference is concerned as to material. The strip 52 is preferably an integral part of the divider 45.

Strips 53 extend from end to end of the divider 45 and fit within notches in tions 47 and of the so as to fit tightly between said walls and thus be ably held in place by friction.

The compartments G are for the accommodation of circular knitting needles and jumper needles and, with the strips 53 removed, such needles, coiled in the customary fashion, may be placed in the compartments G with their upper and lower portions confined behind the flanges 48 to 51, Replacement of the strips 53 insures against accidental dislodgment of the needles from the compartments G.

A tie strap 55 or other suitable means is connected at its opposite ends to parts 38 and 52, respectively, of the dividers 25 and 45 and limits the opening movement of the lid.

It is to be understood from the foregoing description and accompanying drawing that the kit of the present invention is not to be regarded as limited by the above described embodiment. It will be apparent therefore to those skilled in the art that other alternative arrangements of parts, substitution of materials and other organization and assembly procedures may be employed without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention claimed.

Iclaim:

1. In a knitting kit comprising a case for receiving and storing knitting accessories in a selected arrangement and consisting of a bottom wall and front, rear and end Walls rising from the edges of the bottom wall, a lid hingedly attached to said case for closing the same, and a divider secured within the case, said divider having a peripheral wall enclosing a plurality of accessory compartments, a plurality of partitions formed within the peripheral wall of said divider, one of said partitions arranged to provide a compartment with first portions of said peripheral wall of the divider to receive long double point needles, a second partition extending from a second portion of said peripheral wall to said one portion to form a second compartment for receiving a knitting needle rack, a knitting needle rack disposed in said second compartment, said second partition forming with a third portion of said peripheral wall of the divider and with said one portion a third compartment area for receiving a variety of knitting accessories, a fourth partition having an inclined top edge transversely disposed within said second compartment, said rack including a pair of spaced apart end walls, a top wal, a bottom wall and an intermediate wall supported between said end walls, said top and intermediate walls being provided with two groups of axially aligned openings, one group being graduated in decreasing diameter in one direction away from one of said rack side walls, the other group being graduated in decreasing diameter in one direction away from said other of said rack side walls, one of said groups of openings being adapted to receive relatively long knitting needles to permit said longer needles to overlie and rest upon the inclined top edge of said fourth partition when said rack is disposed in a lowermost flat position in said second compartment, the other group adapted to receive relatively short knitting needles, said lid having peripheral Walls extending therefrom and, when in closed position, mating with the peripheral walls of said case, a divider within the lid and having a peripheral wall secured to the peripheral walls of the lid, partitions disposed in the space within the peripheral wall of the lid divider to provide compartments for circular and jumper knitting needles, said lid partitions consisting-of at least one partition disposed transversely of the lid divider and another partition disposed longitudinally of the lid divider forming a plurality of lid compartments therein, said lid divider having top and bottom flanges disposed downwardly and upwardly respectively from the top and bottom portions of the divider peripheral wall, and a strip having portions overhanging opposite sides of said longitudinal portion to retain articles placed in the lid compartments.

2. The invention as defined in claim 1 in which the case divider and partitions are plastic material and are molded as an integral article to be secured as a unit within the peripheral walls of the case.

Claims (1)

1. IN A KNITTING COMPRISING A CASE FOR RECEIVING AND STORING KNITTING ACCESSORIES IN A SELECTED ARRANGEMENT AND CONSISTING OF A BOTTOM WALL AND FRONT, REAR AND END WALLS RISING FROM THE EDGES OF THE BOTTOM WALL, A LID HINGEDLY ATTACHED TO SAID CASE FOR CLOSING THE SAME, AND A DIVIDER SECURED WITHIN THE CASE, SAID DIVIDER HAVING A PERIPHERAL WALL ENCLOSING A PLURALITY OF ACCESSORY COMPARTMENTS, A PLURALITY OF PARTITIONS FORMED WITHIN THE PERIPHERAL WALL OF SAID DIVIDER, ONE OF SAID PARTITIONS ARRANGED TO PROVIDE A COMPARTMENT WITH FIRST PORTIONS OF SAID PERIPHERAL WALL OF THE DIVIDER TO RECEIVE LONG DOUBLE POINT NEEDLES, A SECOND PARTITION EXTENDING FROM A SECONE PORTION OF SAID PERIPHERAL WALL TO SAID ONE PORTION TO FORM A SECOND COMPARTMENT FOR RECEIVING A KNITTING NEEDLE RACK, A KNITTING NEEDLE RACK DISPOSED IN SAID SECOND COMPARTMENT, SAID SECOND PARTITION FORMING WITH A THIRD PORTION OF SAID PERIPHERAL WALL OF THE DIVIDER AND WITH SAID ONE PORTION A THIRD COMPARTMENT AREA FOR ECEIVING A VARIETY OF KNITTING ACCESSORIES, A FOURTH, PARTITION HAVING AN INCLINED TOP EDGE TRANSVERSELY DISPOSED WITHIN SAID SECOND COMPARTMENT, SAID RACK INCLUDING A PAIR OF SPACED APART END WALLS, A TOP WALL, A BOTTOM WALL AND AN INTERMEDIATE WALL SUPPORTED BETWEEN SAID END WALLS, SAID TOP AND INTERMEDIATE WALLS BEING PROVIDED WITH TWO GROUPS OF AXIALLY ALIGNED OPENINGS, ONE GROUP BEING GRADUATED IN DECREASING DIAMETER IN ONE DIRECTION AWAY FROM ONE OF SAID RACK SIDE WALLS, THE OTHER GROUP BEING GRADUATED IN DECREASING DIAMETER IN ONE DIRECTION
