1 Claim. (01. 223-107) My invention relates to new and useful improvements in knitting cases, an object of the invention being to provide a device of the character herewithin described in which may be located the balls of wool, the knitting needles, and the partially finished work,,,thereby enabling same to be transported readily and easily without the possibility of the work becoming disenknitting to be worked upon or replaced in the case immediately as desired.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described whereby the wool and partially finished knitting may be kept in a clean condition at all times.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is economical in manufacture, attractive in appearance, and otherwise well suited for the purpose for which it is designed.
With the foregoing objects in view, and such other objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my knitting case with the closure lid partially removed and the inner cover-panel raised to show the interior thereof. I
In the art of knitting considerable difficulty has been experienced in the past in providing a self-contained receptacle which facilitates the transportation of the various items of equipment necessary. The majority of people usually desire to carry their knitting with them during a journey and find it extremely inconvenient when carried in the conventional knitting bag. It will be appreciated that present day transportation, necessitating one or more changes before arriving at the destination; does not lend itself to the occupation of knitting under these conditions. Consequently Ihave devised the case pared for transportation immediately as desired.
Proceeding therefore to describe my invention in detail it will be seen upon reference to the accompanying drawing to comprise the rel-..
atively shallow open-topped rectangular case i manufactured from relatively rigid plastic mae terial or the like and being provided with the carrying handle 2'situatedupon one of thelongitudinally extending sides 3. Spanning the sides 4 of the box coterminous with the upper edges thereof and the rear longitudinally extending side 5, is a relatively narrow panel 6 thus forming what I designate as my needle compartment. The medially situated dividing wall l extends between the-sides l of the box and divides the box into the elongated rear or work compartment 8, alongside the-front compartment 9. The transverse partitions H) are situated vertically in parallel spaced relationship between the front' side 3 of the box and the aforementioned wall I thus dividing the compartment 9 into four relatively small linearly arranged wool containing compartments II. The partitions m are maintained in position between the vertically disposed pairs of cleats l2 which are rigidly attached to the front side 3 and the wall 1 by means of suitable adhesive or the like. Hingedly attached in the conventional manner to the upper edge of the wall 1 is the cover-panel l3 of rectangular configuration and having dimensions slightly smaller than the corresponding compartment 9. In this connection it is to be noted that the aforementioned wall 1 and the transverse partitions H) are recessed slightly within the box in order to permit the aforementioned cover-panel l3 to lie flush with the upper edges thereof when in the closed position.
Strand passing apertures l4 are provided in the cover panel l3, there being an aperture centrally disposed above each of the compartments ll. Serpentine slots !5 within the panel extend from the forward edge thereof to these apertures in order that the strand of wool may be introduced therein, the double curvature of the slot preventing undesirable displacement of the strand unless required. The tab 16 is provided centrally along the forward edge of the panel l3 and is receivable by the recess l1 situated in the upper edge of the front side 3 in order to assist in the opening and closing of the panel, it being appreciated that, when in the closed position, the panel I3 is flush with the uppermostedges the aforementioned dividing wall I, thus per-.
mitting the lid to be lowered onto the box, the
vertical ends 2! being designed to go within the ends of the box when closed.
Having therefore described myinvention'indetail, its method of application will now be presented.
The balls of wool (not illustrated) are placed within the individual compartments I! and the individual strands are passed through the serpentine slots [5 to the apertures l4 whereupon the cover-panel l3 may be closed. While knitting, the lid is should be removed whereupon the wool will feed through the apertures is as required. When it is desired to store the partially completed article, the article, together with the needles may be placed in the work compartment 8 whereupon the lid 18 may be replaced thus maintaining the equipment within the separate compartments. In this connection i'tshould be noted that the vertically disposed apertures 23 are provided in the ends 4 subiacent the aforementioned panel 6 in order to receive knitting needles that may be longer than the dimensions of the box.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as hereinabove described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claim. Without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
A multi-compartmented knitting case having a plurality of wool containing compartments therein in linear arrangement an elongated work compartment alongside said linear arrangement of the wool compartments being separated therefrom by a medially situated dividing Wall parallel with a pair of opposite side walls constituting part of the case, a cover-panel for said wool compartments, said panel being provided with a plurality of strand-passing apertures and serpentine passageways each extending from one edge of said panel to a diiferent aperture for the purpose specified, the number of apertures and passageways corresponding to the number of compartments, and a closure lid for covering one side of said case having'end walls for interior lapping relation with the corresponding walls of said case, said end" walls being slotted to straddle said dividing wall and extending substantially to the base of said case to prevent accidental displacement of said lid when said case is being carried.
