UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE W. WOOLLEY, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS TO GEORGE V. FOSTER AND ARTHUR W. WOOD, OF BUFFALO,
NEW YORK.
WAS H B OARD.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,394, dated March 10, 1903.
Application filed October 2, 1902.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE W. WooL- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vashboards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a washboard provided with extensible or adjustable legs or supports whereby the washboard can be raised or lowered in the washtub to the proper height, as found desirable or necessary to suit different users.
The object of the invention is to provide a washboard with an adjustable support of sim- .ple and inexpensive construction and which can be quickly and easily operated to change the height of the board in the tub.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a washboard embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section in line 3 3, Fig. 2'. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the washboard.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
The washboard may be of the well-known type, which, as shown in the drawings, comprises side bars A, which constitute the legs of the board, a rubbing plate or surface a between the side bars, andupper and lower transverse bars B and O, which connect the side bars above and below the rubbing-surface.
D D represent the extension or adjustable legs or supports for the washboard. Each extension-leg is arranged adjacent and parallel to one of the side bars of the washboard and is slidably mounted thereon in any preferred manner. As shown, the extensionlegs are of less thickness than the side bars and slide in longitudinal grooves or channels (1, formed in the outer faces of the side bars. The two extension-legs are held in the grooves and are rigidly connected, so that they can be moved together, by a transverse strip or bar E,which extends across the back of the washboard and is secured to the extension-legs, for instance, by screws, which are driven into 50 the extension-legs through holes in the ends securely in the position to which they are ad- Serial No. 125,623. (No modeL) e of the connecting-bar, which are bent forwardly at the sides of the extension-legs.
Asingle securing or clamping device is provided for locking both of the extension-legs jnsted. The means shown in the drawings for this purpose is constructed is as follows:
F represents a clamping strip or bar, which is arranged lengthwise of the board on the rear side thereof. The clamping-bar is secured at its upper and lower ends to the upper and lower transverse bars of the washboard by any suitable means and is provided with a longitudinal slot f.
G represents a clamp-bolt which extends rearwardly through the slot in the clampingbar and a hole in the transverse connectingbar E. The head of the bolt bears against the front face of the'clamping-bar, and that part of the shank which engages in the slotf is square or angular to prevent the bolt from turning.
Hrepresentsabinding-nut which is screwed on the threaded rearwardly-extending shank of the bolt and is adapted to bear against the connecting-bar E or a washer interposed between the same and the connectingbars. When the nut is screwed upon the bolt, the clamping and connecting bars are clamped tightly between the head of the bolt and the nut and the extension-legs are held securely. When it is desired to adjust the extensionlegs up or down on the washboard to lower or raise the latter in the tub, the nut is loosened, the legspushed up or down to the desired point, and the nut again screwed upon the bolt to bind the clamping and connecting bars together. The nut serves as the handle or knob by which the extension legs are moved up or down, as well as the means for locking the extension-legs in their adjusted positions.
The relative arrangement of the clamping and connecting bars may be changed and other clamping devices employed without departing from the scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination with a washboard, of extension-legs therefor slidably mounted at the sides of the washboard, a transverse mem- I00 her connecting said extension-legs, a member secured to the Washboard and extending longitudinally thereof, and a device for connecting said transverse and longitudinal members to hold said extension-legs in adjusted positions, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a Washboard provided with a member having a slot extending longitudinally of the Washboard, extensionlegs slidably mounted at the sides of the washboard, means connecting said extension-legs and extending transversely across the Washboard, and a device carried by said transverse means and working in said longitudinal slot for holding said extension-legs in adjusted positions, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a washboard, of extension-legs therefor slidably mounted at the sides of the washboard, a transverse bar connecting said legs, alongitudinal clam pin gbar secured to the Washboard, and a clamping device carried by said transverse bar and engaging said clamping-bar for holding said extension-legs in adjusted positions, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a washboard having side bars provided with longitudinal grooves, extension-legs slidably arranged in said grooves, a transverse bar connecting said extension-legs, a longitudinal slotted clamping-bar secured to the Washboard, a bolt extending through the slot in said clampingbar and through a hole in said connectingbar, and a nut screwed on said bolt for clamping said clamping and connecting bars together to hold said extension-legs in adjusted positions, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand this 22d day of September, 1902.
THEODORE W. WOOLLEY.
