FREDERICK T. POWELL, OF TOLEDO, OI-IIO.
SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,250, dated March 10, 1903.
Application filed October 9, 1902.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK T. POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers; and I do declare the following to be'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of scrapers which are employed in removing inscriptions from boxes and barrels and for scraping chopping-blocks and the like; and its objects are to provide a strong, cheap, simple, durable device which may be conveniently operated by both hands, in which the handle may be swung at any desired angle horizontally, and in which the knife is readily removable and interchangeable. I attain these objects by means of the devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and shown and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my scraper ready for use, and Fig. 2 a central longitudinal vertical sectional elevation of the same.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both views.
In the drawings, 1 is a U-shaped yoke the ends of which lie in the same plane, the plane being inclined inwardly and downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2.
2 is a knife having a curved edge and secured at each end, as at 3, to the ends of the yoke 1.
4 is a handle, provided at one end with a suitable handpiece 5 and being turned at its opposite end at about a right angle to the direction of its length, as at 6. Sidewise Serial No. 126,401. (No model.)
through the yoke 1, midway of its length, is a hole, through which the inner end of the handle 4 passes, as at 7. A screw 8 and a washer 9 upon the end of the handle 4 press the yoke 1 loosely against a shoulder 10, formed on the handle, these parts forming a bearing upon which the yoke may be swung in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the handle.
The operation of my device is as follows: One hand of the operator, usually the left hand, grasps the yoke 1, the opening of which is of a size to conveniently receive the hand, and the handpiece 5 is grasped by the other hand, the edge of the knife being turned downwardly. The downwardly projecting edge of the knife is now drawn over the object to be scraped. It will be seen that the swiveled connection between the handle and the knife carrying yoke permits the two hands of the operator to assume any desired position in relation to each other, thus facilitating the application of pressure and stress upon the yoke and knife, and thus enabling the operator to perform the work more rapidly and with greater ease than with the scrapers heretofore in use.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A scraper comprising a U-shaped yoke, a scraping-knife secured to the extremities of the yoke, a handle disposed in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the yoke, and pivotal connections between the handle and the yoke, whereby the yoke and handle may be swung in substantially parallel planes.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED. T. POW-ELL.
