SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,077, dated December 16, 1 902.
Application filed August 5, 1901. Serial No. 70,962. (No model.)
To all whom; it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, THOMAS MORRIN, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain useful Improvements in Adjustable-Handle Sockets; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an adjustable-handle socket adapted to be used in conjunction with any device in connection with which an adjustable long or short handle is desired, but being more especially adapted to be used in conjunction with mop, squeegee, and brush handles.
The aim of my invention is to provide a socket for a handle so arranged that the operator can instantly adjust the handle to any desired angle, as will be more clearly de scribed hereinafter.
In 1 the accompanying drawings I have showninFigurelanend view ofan adjustablehandle socket embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a side view of my handle-socket. Fig. 3 shows a central sectional view of one of my handle-sockets, while Figs. 4 and 5 show, re-
spectively, a top view of the keeper and a side view of the threaded trunnion-pin as used inmy invention.
, As has been set forth, the object of my in vention is to provide an adjustable socket adapted to receive a handle, though the same is provided with a socket, which in itself I forms a stub-handle, by means of which the device may be operated in case no long handle is desired. 7
In carrying out the aim of my invention I I provide a base-plate 4:, with two upwardlyextending semicircular plates D D, which extend in parallel lines,as is shown more clearly in Fig. 1. The plate 4 below is provided with a suitable central opening 7 ,and in alinement with said opening the plate 4: and the semicircular plates Dare provided with the trunnion-sockets 6 6, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Workingwithin the trunnion-bearings 6 6 is a T-shaped trunnion-pin 12, the head or trunnion 10 of which is adapted to be revolubly held within the cross-bearings 6 6, while the threaded stem 12 projects beyond the semicircular plates D D. Below this baseplate 4: is provided with the screw-openings l l. forking upon the peripheral surface of the semicircular plates D D is a keeper B, provided with the downwardly-bent edges :r, at opposite ends, so that the keeper B rides upon the semicircular plates D D at two points, as is shown in Fig. 2. This keeper is further provided with the downwardly-extending lips 5, which extend between the two plates, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that the keeper B cannot be displaced sidewise. This keeper B is provided with the boss or collar 2 and a central opening 3, through which the threaded trunnion-pin 12 extends, as is shown in Fig. 3.
Adapted to thread upon the trunnion-pin 12 is a socket A, which is provided with an interior opening 1), adapted to receive ahandle and below with a threaded opening a, into which the pin 12 threads. An opening a is provided within the socket A at a suitable point, as is shown in Fig. 2, so that a screw may be used in securing a suitable handle within the socket A.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a top view of the keeper B. 'When the parts have been properly constructed and assembled, the socket is secured to the brush, squeegee, rubbingblock, or any other suitable device in connection with which an adjustable handle is desirable in having suitable screws pass through the openings 1 within the base-plate 4. A suitable handle is then placed within the socket A, when the device is ready for oper ation.
Should it be desired to place the handle at a position at an angle to the perpendicular, it would simply be necessary for the operator to turn the handle to the left, which operation would unth read the socket A from the threaded-trunnion-pin 12 and permit the keeper B to loosely ride between the radial plates D and the socket A. After the handle has been brought to the proper angle the operator would simply turn the same to the right, when he would at once thread the socket A upon the trunnion-pin, which in turn would be carried upward within the trunnion-bearings 6 6, which operation would impinge the keeper B between the socket A and the radial plates D to securely lock the same at the desired angle. This looking or unlocking of the handle may be accomplished Without removing the squeegee or scrubbing-brush from the floor. Where this attachment is used without a handle, the socket A may be used as a handhold or handle, as it is sufficiently long to be grasped by the hand of an operator.
The device is simple of construction and readily operated, and,
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the character described, the combination with a base-plate provided with two upwardly-extending semicircular plates held in parallel planes and having a central opening, trunnion-sockets entering from below secured to and forming a part of said parallel semicircular plates, a T-shaped threaded trunnion-pin the cross-head or trunnions of which are adapted to work into aforesaid trunnion-sockets, the said threaded stem projecting between and beyond aforesaid semicircular plates, the aforesaid trunnion-bearings extending in a plane atright angles to the plane of said semicircular plates, a perforated keeper working over aforesaid threaded stem and upon the peripheral edges of aforesaid semicircular plates, said keeper being provided with downwardly-hent riding edges at opposite ends, said edges riding upon aforesaid semicircular plates, said keeper further being provided with downwardly-extending lips adapted to slide between aforesaid semicircular plates, so that said keeper cannot be displaced laterally, and a socket adapted to receive a handle and having a threaded opening, said socket threading upon aforesaid threaded stem and being adapted to screw down upon aforesaid keeper, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
