CUTTING ATTACHMENT FOR PLIERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,038, dated March 2, 1897.

Be it known that I, AUGUST H. HESTERHA- GEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Attachments for Pliers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts Wherever found throughout the several views.

This invention relates to pliers; and the object thereof is to provide a pair of common or ordinary pliers with a cutting attachment for cutting wire and similar substances.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a front view of a pair of pliers with my improved cutting attachment; Fig. 2, a back view thereof; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 an inside view of one of the jaws of the pliers.

In the practice of my invention I provide a pair of pliers of the usual form, each being provided with a jaw 5, and said jaws are each provided transversely of the inner surfaces with a notch or recess 6. I also provide transverse blades or plates 7, which are countersunk in the jaws 5, or connected therewith bya tongue-and-groove construction, and said plates or blades 7 are each provided with an angular arm 8 and are held in place by setscrews 9, which pass through said angular arms and into screw-threaded transverse bores 10, one of which is formed in each of said jaws, and each of said screws is provided with a collar or washer 11, which is mounted thereon between their respective jaws 5 and the arms 8 of the plates or blades 7.

The inner ends of the plates or blades are beveled and sharpened, as shown at 12, and the position of said plates or blades may be adjusted transversely of the jaws 5 by means of the said screws 9.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawin gs and the following statement thereof. It will be understood that the jaws 5 may be used in the ordinary manner whenever desired, or in other words the device may be used as a pair of pliers whenever necessary or whenever desirable, and it may also be used for cutting wire or similar substances, the wire or other substance or article to be out being passed transversely through the notches or recesses 6 and being cut by means of the plates or blades 7, the handles 13 being pressed together for this purpose.

This device is simple in construction and operation, and also comparatively inexpensive, while being well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, pliers provided with jaws,each having a transverselyextending notch or recess on the inner side thereof, a transversely-extending blade or plate countersunk in each of said jaws, an angular arm secured to each of said plates, screws holding the same in position and passing through said angular arms into the screwthreaded transverse bores formed in each of said jaws, a collar or washer secured to each of said screws and mounted thereon between their respective jaws and arms, the inner end ofsaid plates or blades being beveled or sharpened, all of said parts being combined substantially as and for the purposes described.
