VAN A. PUGSLEY.
Cutting-Pliers.

Patented May 12,1874.
WITNESSES INVENTDB:
Q murmurs.
UNITED STATES PATENT CFFIGE.
VAN ALLEN PUGSLEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN CUTTING-PLIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,789, dated May 12, 1874; application filed April 18,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VAN ALLEN PUGSLEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cutting-Pliers, of which the followingis a specification Figure l is a side View of my improved cutting-pliers, the guard bar being removed. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the guard-bar.
Similar letters of reference indicat corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish improved pliers, which, in addition to their ordinary use as pliers, shall be so formed as to readily cut off metallic wires and rods, and which shall have great power when used as cutters, while being simple in construction and convenient in use. Theinvention consists in an improved cutting-pliers formed of two parts or handles, having enlargements formed upon them at the bases of their jaws, and made with a circular recess and a slot in the enlargement'of the one part, and a cylindrical projection and a slot in the enlargement of the other part, and kept in place upon each other by a guard bar or plate, as hereinafter fully described.
A and B are the handles of the instrument, upon the forward ends of which are formed the jaws a I). The handles A B at the bases of the jaws a b are enlarged, and in the en-. largement of the handle A is formed a circular recess, (l to receive andfit upon a cylindrical projection, b formed upon the enlarge ment of the handle B, so as to pivot the said parts together. In the enlargement of the two parts A B are formed two slots, a h of such a size as to receive the largest wires or rods to be cut, and extending from the edges of said enlargements to about the centers, as shown in Fig. 1. The slots 0. b are so placed that they may be brought parallel with each other by spreading the handles apart, so that the wire or rod to be out can be conveniently inserted. Then, as the handles are moved toward each other, the wire or rod, being at the center or axis of the instrument, will be acted upon by the edges of the slots with immense power, and will be easily cut off. The parts A B of the instrument are kept in place upon each other by a guard bar or plate, 0, which passes across the enlarged part of the handle B, and its ends are secured to the part A by bolts or screws, as indicated by the holes in Fig. 1, and as shown in Fig. 2. The bar or plate 0 is curved or notched, as shown in Fig. 3, so that it may not obstruct the slots a b Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved cutting-pliers, formed of the parts A a and B N, having enlargements formed upon them at the bases of their jaws, and made with a circular recess, a and a slot, a in the enlargement of the part A, and a cylindrical projection, b and a slot, 1), in the enlargement of the part B, and kept in place upon each other by the guard-bar G, substair tially as herein shown and described.
VAN ALLEN PUGSLEY.
