6 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures IVKO SCRAPER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates generally to scrapers and more particularly to a novel and improved scraper specifically designed for use in the scraping and cleaning of concrete forms and the like used in the construction industry.
2. Description of the Prior Art There have long been known in the prior art scraper devices of various types and configurations for scraping paint finishes, decorated surfaces, and the like to provide the same with a smooth finish. Such scrapers further normally provide that the scraping blade is of a double edged type so that upon dulling of the first edge,
the blade may be removed from the scraper and rotated in a manner to expose the second edge for utilization before having to discard or sharpen the blade.
However, all such prior art devices are adapted more-or-less for use as finishing tools, and are not designed or adapted for the rough usage and treatment required of the construction industry for the scraping and cleaning of concrete remains from the edges of concrete forms prior to further usage of the same.
Thus, the construction industry utilizes conventional type scrapers at the present time for scraping the forms and form edges used in construction for the cleaning of the concrete which may be sticking thereto from the prior use of the forms, this being required prior to fresh utilization of the concrete forms if the forms are to be properly fitted together in adjacent relationship with tight edges to prevent concrete from leaking therethrough.
Such conventional type scrapers, however, require a great amount of time and effort on the part of the worker to properly scrape the forms, with such scrapers normally resulting in a slight damage to the edges of the form during each scraping so that eventually, after a great number of scrapings, the form edges are marred to a degree requiring replacement if the form is to remain serviceable, as otherwise the damage thereto is of a nature requiring the discarding of the concrete form.
It would thus be desirable to provide a scraper specifically designed for use by the construction industry in the scraping of the edges of concrete forms and the like in a manner to not damage the forms while providing ease of use and efficiency of the time of the worker.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The presentinvention remedies and overcomes all of the foregoing deficiencies and disadvantages of presently used conventional scrapers in the concrete construction industry by providing a novel scraper having a special guide head providing a perfect guide for the scraper along the edge of a concrete form and incorporating therein a double edged replaceable blade, the blade being supplied in different sizes such that the scraper may be used to scrape the edges of concrete forms of different sizes and configurations.
It is a feature of the invention to provide a scraping device which is strong and relatively simple in construction, which is provided with means for quickly re.- moving the blade for replacement and changing purposes while still pivotally securing the blade to the scraping device in a manner to permit the rotation thereof about its axis to expose a different scraping edge of the blade for different movements of the scraper relative to the edge of the concrete form.
A further feature of the invention provides a scraper designed specifically for the concrete construction industry wherein both edges of the scraper are used to clean the concrete form.
Still a further feature of the present invention provides a scraper having a guide head used to align the scraping blade along an edge of the concrete form to prevent any slipping thereof thus avoiding damage to the edges of the form, this resulting in a saving of time and a speeding up of production as well as saving the cost of replacement of forms to the contractor.
Still a further feature of the present invention provides a scraper permitting a worker to stand along one side of a concrete form in a manner facing the edge thereof and to be able to, in one easy motion, clean the edge of the form by first placing the guide head against the edge of the form and then moving the scraper back and forth therealong, such as in an upward and downward motion, to thus clean the edge of the form without taking the scraper off of the form edge.
Still a further feature of the present invention provides a guide head having a blunt pointed edge projecting forwardly thereof and intended for use in cleaning areas of concrete forms where the concrete has imbedded itself, such as in the dogs of the clamps that hold the forms securely together along their edges, this thus enabling a worker to clean the concrete from-the fastening hardware as used on concrete forms.
The provision of a scraping device for use in scraping and cleaning the edges of concrete forms as used in the construction industry, such as briefly outlined above, and possessing the stated advantages, constitutes the principal features and advantages of the present invention. The provision of a scraper which is simple in its construction and which is formed of a plurality of components each being readily manufactured at a relatively low cost and by simple manufacturing methods due to their respective simplicity of construction; one which is rugged and durable and which therefore may be guaranteed by the manufacturer to withstand the rough usage normally associated with the construction industry; one permitting ease of changement of blades to encourage the worker to always utilize an appropriate sharpened blade rather than a blade having dulled scraping edges; one which is provided with a guide head providing the perfect guide for the scraping and cleaning of the edges of the concrete forms; and one which, otherwise, is well adapted to perform the services required of it, are further desirable features which have been borne in mind in the production and development of the present invention.
Other features and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

If desired, the handle 11 may be of a sufficient length to permit the scraper to be gripped in both hands of a worker should such be desirable for more efficient operation in the cleaning of the edges of a concrete form. The handle 1 1 may be manufactured out of metal, wood, plastic, or any other suitable satisfactory material.
Projecting longitudinally forward of the handle 11 is a shank 21 made of flat stock material, one end of the shank being permanently attached to the handle 11 in any known manner with the shank projecting outwardly from the end 12 of the handle. A guide head 25 is formed integrally on the forward end portion of the shank 21, the guide head being of a flat generally elliptical configuration having flat transversely spaced parallelly extending from and back surfaces 26 and 27 respectively, and arcuate opposed concave top and bottom edge surfaces 28 and 29 respectively. The guide head 25 is formed co-planar with the plane of the shank 21 in the preferred embodiment, with it being understood that shank 21 may be of other suitable configurations if so desired. Projecting forwardly of guide head 25 and formed integrally therewith is a tapered triangularly shaped member 31 formed co-planar with the guide head and having a blunt pointed front end portion 32 formed thereon in a conical shape. Further, extending transversely through guide head 25 approximately centrally thereof is an opening 33. Spaced radially from the axis of opening 33 there is provided a pair of stop members in the form of elongated cylindrical pins 34 and 35 each having one end mounted to the front surface 26 of the guide head 25 and projecting axially outwardly therefrom normal to the plane of the guide head, the pins 34 and 35 being preferably spaced in diametric alignment with each other as taken through the axis of the opening 33.
A scraping blade is provided consisting of a cylindrically shaped body portion 51 having an aperture 52 extending completely through the width of the body portion, a rectangularly shaped blade portion 53 formed integrally with the body portion with a thickness less than the diameter of the body portion and projecting radially outwardly from the axis thereof, and a double edged scraping edge portion 54 provided on the outermost projecting end of the blade portion 53 and extending along the complete width thereof. The cylindrically shaped body portion 51 is provided with an inner end 48 and an outer end 49. The end of opening 52 disposed in outer end 49 of body portion 51 is provided with an enlarged diameter designated generally by reference numeral 55 extending partially inwardly of the body portion coaxial with opening 52 and adapted to receive therein a head 61 of an elongated threaded bolt member 62 when the same is axially inserted into opening 52, the head 61 being received on a shoulder 56 defined between adjacent openings 52 and 55.
A nut 65 having a threaded opening 66 extending therethrough is adapted to threadedly engage the end of bolt 62. An internal opening 67 is provided in an edge of the nut 65 and extends radially therethrough to receive therein a set screw 68, the. use of the same which will be described in later paragraphs.
Adapted to be disposed intermediate nut 65 and back surface 27 of gude head 25 is a ring shaped thrust bearing 70 having an opening 71 extending therethrough centrally thereof with the diameter of the opening being slightly larger than the diameter of opening 66 in nut 65 to permit the bolt 62 to pass freely therethrough.
Adapted to be disposed intermediate inner end 48 of cylindrical body portion 51 of blade member 50 and front surface 26 of guide head 25 is-a disc shaped washer 72 having an opening 73 disposed centrally thereof and extending axially therethrough, the opening 73 having a diameter greater than the diameter of bolt 62 in order to permit the free passage of the bolt therethrough.
It is to be understood that blade member 50 may be provided in different sizes such that the length of bolt 62 may vary to accomodate blade members of different widths without having the access length of the bolt member projecting outwardly of the nut 65 when the scraper 10 is in the assembled condition.
In operation, the bolt member 62 is axially inserted into opening 52 in the blade member to project out of the inner end 48 thereof, after which the bolt passes through opening 73 and washer 72, after which the bolt passes through opening 33 of guide head 25 in a manner to place the washer 72 into juxtaposition with the front surface 26 of the guide head, after which the bolt passes through opening 71 of thrust bearing 70, after which nut 65 is threadedly engaged by opening 66 on the bolt with the nut bearing against thrust bearing 70 until the desired tightening of the bolt to the guide head is achieved, this being determined when the blade is snugly mounted and yet capable of pivotal movement about the axis of opening 52 relative to the guide head, after which set screw 68 is operated in a manner to engage the portion of bolt 62 passing through nut opening 66 so as to positively retain the tool in the assembled position and prevent any loosening tendencies of the nut during the usage of the scraping device 10, such as due to vibrations, accidental dropping, and the like. The blade is now mounted for pivotal movement about the axis of opening 52 with the limits of such movement being determined by pins 34 and 35 defining stop members for the blade.
In use, a worker positions himself along a side of a concrete form in a manner facing the edge of the form and, in one easy motion, cleans the edge of the concrete form by first placing the guide against the edge of the form and then in a back and forth movement of the scraping device 10, such as in an upward and downward movement along the edge of the concrete form, the blade edge 54 effectively scrapes the form edge to clean any concrete remains therefrom prior to further usage of the concrete form, this scraping being in a manner not causing damage to the edges of the concrete forms. When scraping in one direction the blade 53 rotates about bolt 62 until engaging stop 35 such that one edge of the blade edge 54 engages and scrapes the edge of the concrete form, with movement of the scraping device in the opposite direction effecting the pivotal movement of the blade 53 about bolt 62 until it engages the opposite stop member 34 such that the opposite edge of scraping edge 54 engages the edge of the concrete form to effect the scraping thereof. Thus, both edges of the scraping edge 54 of the blade 53 are used during the scraping of the edge of a concrete form.
As to the blunt point 32, this is used to effect the cleaning of areas of a concrete form where concrete has imbedded itself, this especially being important in the cleaning of the fastening hardware found on con crete forms, such as in the dogs and clamps used to secure concrete forms securely together in edge-to-edge relationship.
There is thus provided a novel scraper specifically intended for the scraping of concrete from the edge of concrete forms while also providing a tool to effect the cleaning of fastening hardware of concrete forms such that the forms may be used numerous times in an effective manner with such scraping and cleaning being performed in a way not damaging or marring the forms in any way.
It is to be understood that the form of this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that this invention is not to be limited to the exact arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings or described in this specification as various changes in the details of construction as to shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of the novel concepts thereof, or the scope of the sub-joined claims.
