Description

i i i @uiten faire @anni @Hire l InALAeKnroFLnBANoN,0,1110; l Lettere Patent No.171,888', dated December 10, 1867. l
IMPROVEMENT IN FENGES.
. TO ALL 'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: i Be it known that I, IRA LACKEY, ofiIiebanon, in Warren county, in the State of Ohio, have invented l certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exactdescription thereof, 'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i
Figure 1 representsa portion of my portable fence, showing the structure in perspective.
Figure 2 representsone panel of the same detached.
Figure 3 is-,one of the diagonal braces, and
Figure 4; is one of the sills.
The panels are made of boards, secured by pins, screws, or nails to three uprights or posts, a Z1 e. The feet of theposts a c are made to extend below the bottom board of the panel, and are made cylindrical, to fit in the holes el e of the sills A. In setting up the fence, the backs of the panels are brought together, overlapping at their ends, v where they are secured by means of the diagonalbraces B, as represented 4in the drawings.4 The upper ends of the posts 'a c are grooved, as indicated by dotted lines in fig. 2, at f. Slots, gg, are made in the ends of the 'sills A, in which the bottom portionof the dingonals C will snugly lit. Pins, z, through these diagonale, C, will, (when the fence is put`together,) be brought under the slotted ends -ofthe sills A. Hooks, z'or loops, j, may be employed to lock the diagonal braces at their tops'. It is obvious that the lower or bottom portions'of the diagonals C may be made of different lengths, and as they support the entire strnc ture, the fence may be so constructed as to be u scd on hill-sides or inclined ground. The notches 7c in the braces Care formed to correspond with the height of the p osts a c, and so as to it into the grooves'fon the sides of the posts, near theirtops, for the purpose of strengthening the structure and locking the panels together. i
My improved fence may be moved from place to place with the greatest ease and dispatch, there being but the single fastening, consisting of a hook or loop, for each panel; and the parts are simple, plain pieces, which will fit snugly and compaetly together for transportation. I i
At the lower ends the posts a c are rounded, and t loosely in the holes d c of the sills, any panel in the line of fence may be readily converted into a gate, by simply loosening the hookl or loop at the top of the diagonal braces C C, whichl will permit the panel to be' swung around upon one'of'its end posts. And in the same manner a. corner may be made in the fence, wherever necessary, at the corners of a field.
The sills will be first placed upon the ground, at proper distances apart, when the panels will be set uponthem, with their projecting cylindrical feet inthe holes d e of the sills, The posts will be always on the outside, while the boards at the ends of the panels will be brought together, to form the joint between the panels;
L and this arrangement brings the gro ove'sff(near the topsof the posts a e) on the outside of the fence, and g in proper position for the notched edges of the braces C to iit into them. These braces, C, are first placed in the slots or grooves g g, with their pins, i, below the sill, as represented in iig. 1 ofthe drawing; and the final operation of setting up the fence is the bringing of the bevelled ends of the braces C together, and securing them by the h ook z' or loop j. p V i It will be seen that the notch k, which ts in the groovef, and over the top of the posts a c, will firmly hold the structure in place. YThe braces C being connected to the 'slotted ends of the sills A by the pins a secure fastening,`iwhich is easily detached, is Iemployed in combination with the inclined notch k, which fits over the end of the posts, andforms a clamp to hind the ends of the panels together.
Having fully described my improvement in fences, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination of the sills A, braces C, and hooks or loops ij, `with the grooved posts a c of the panels, when the parts are constructed and arranged to form a detachable and portable fence, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, this 31st day of May, 1867.
IRA LAeKnY.
