IMPROVEMENT IN RLLER-LIFTING POWERS.

To whom it may concern Y Be it known that I, ELIsHA WHITGOMB, of Waterville, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new Aand useful Improvement in Roller-.Lifting Yower; and Ido declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof,

reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon and heilig a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my device.

The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a new device for raising buildings, railwayscars, or other heavy articles.

ln raising buildings which req'iire new sills by the ordinary jacli-sorews, the building` must be blocked up and the screws removed before the new sill can be put in place. This deviceis designed to obviate this diiiicnlty, by raising the buildingand sustaining it while the sill is being put in. 4

The invention consists in the newand ingenious arrangement and operation of the various'parts, as Amore l'ully hereinafter described.

A standard, B, is secured to the longitudinal ceuter oi' said roller by means of a strap, C, in such a manner-'that said roller" will have a free rotation in lsaid strap or box.

Upon each side of the strap and Istandard the roller is provided with ratchetteeth E, similar in form and operation to those usually employed upon windlasses.

Dogs D, with hooks upon their lower ends, are pivotcd, one upon eac-h side, to said standard, in such a manner that the hooked ends of said dogs will engage with said ratchet-teeth E, and prevent the backwardv rotation of-.thc roller, except when such movement is requiredfwhen the dogs are disengaged for the purpose.

The upper end of the standard'B is notched upon one side, as shown, and has a strap, F, 'rigidly secured to it, for the purposes hereinafter mentioned.

An extension, G, of this standard is shown, notched,

so as to engage with the notches upon the standard proper.

standard B, and over it passes the ropeb, one end of which is secured .to the lower end of the extension G, for the purposes,hereinafter mentioned.

` .K isa clevis secured to the upper end of the extension G, and is designed to engage with a reverse hook, the opposite end ofwhich passes under the house, car, or other object it is desired to raise.

L is a strap or tie secured, also, to the upper end of said extension G, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

Shuld il; be necessary to raise a frame house for any purpose, I take one of the devices constructed as above described for each side of thehouse, unless it is a large one, when more may be. required.- I put down planks or timbers upon which to set the device and rotate the rollers. I then incline the top ot' the machine against the house, at an angle ot' about thirty degrees, and, by means of a reverse hook, connect the clevs K.- with the sill of the house. Or, if deemed preferable, a rope or cha-in may be secured to the top of the machine, passing over the upper end of the extension of the standard, and'lits lower end made fast to the sill.

llhen, with proper handspilies, the roller is rotated toward the house, (the saine operation being simultaneously performed upon each side ot' the house at the saine time,) until the device stands perpendicular with the side ot the house, the dogs preventing a backward rotation ofthe rolllers, while the spursv prevent said rollers from slipping on the plaukvor timbers.

Should it then be deemed necessary to raise the house still higher, it may be blocked up and the devices -placed in their original positions, as rst described. i l

lhe wedges I should be removed, when the operator may increase the length ot' his standard by pulling the rope b, by means of which the extension Gis raised until its notches will engage with the notches of thestandard, at a higher point, when the wedges should bev readj usted, the chain' or reverse hook made fast to the sill and thehead of the device, and the operation ot' rotating the rollers toward the house again repeated, until the latter is raised to the desired height.

\Vhen this is done the new sills may be pnt in place, and a reverse rota-tion of the rollers will allow the house to settle down in place.

'When it is desired to raise a. niillstone or other heavyweight perpendicularly two ofthe machines are set up, their tops meeting at an inclination of about thirty, degrees, the head ot' one being inserted through the strap or tie L, by means of which they are held together. 'The tops ofthe machines are then connected with the object to' be raised by any suitable ch'an or hook, and the rollers rotated toward each other nntil the weight is lifted, as desired.

That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v l. The combination, substantially as described and shown, of the roller A and the standard B, for the purposes set forth.
