Nrrno STATES PATENT rricn,
JOHN HOMAS HASKELL, OFNOBVALK, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONFLHALF TO H E. STREATOR, OF SAME PLACE.
SCAFFOLDlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,389, dated March 18, 1884.
Application filed November 27,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. IIASKELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwalk, iuthe county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Scaffold, of which the following is aspeciiication, ref erence being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to scaffolding, the ob- Io ject being to provide a scaffold which may be readily adjusted to any height, and, further, to provide improved means for retaining the scaffold in an elevated position when in use.
The invention consists, broadly, in the combination, with supporting-beams, of a frame or scaffold adapted to slide thereon, and means for locking said scafi'old at any desired point on the supporting-beams.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section.
A A represent vertical beams, which are secured together attheir upper ends by means 2 5 of a bolt, a, which allows of a limited lateral movement of said beams, and upon which is mounted a pulley, a between said beams A A.
B represents my improved scaffold, which is constructed in the following manner:
0 0 represent the side beams, to the lower ends of which are secured transverse braces b b. To the upper ends of these beams O O are secured beams or braces c c. The top edge of the brace c is on the same plane with the top of the beams G (3, while the bar 0 is secured a short distance below the upper edge of the beams C G, and serves as a support for the beam D, the end of which is mortised in .0 the brace c. The other end of this beam D is slotted to receive an idler or roller, (1, which bears against the wall of the house or other object in connection with which the scad'oldis used when said scaffold is to be raised or low- 4 3 cred:
E E represent bracingbeams secured, respectively, to the sides of the beam D and to the beams C- G near their lower ends. a
F represents a brace secured, one end to the bar 0 and the other or lower end to the bar I).
This brace or upright F is slotted near its upper end to receive a pulley, 2.
G represents the device for locking or securing the scaffold at any desired point up on the beams A A, and consists of a bar, 0, having secured at its lower end a cross-bar, f. Thebar c is slotted nearly its entire length, to receive a headed pin or bolt, c, projecting from the bar F, to allow of bar 6 being raised or lowered, the head of the bolt or pin 6 preventing the disengagement of the bar 6, and yet allowing it to slide freely upon the bar F. To the end of this bar 6 is secured a rope or chain, c, which passes over the pulley d, and may be secured to any suitable fastening, (l
l-I represents a rope or chain secured to the upper end of the scaffold, and passing over the pulley a", by which means the scaffold is raised upon the beams A. A.
I represents a suitable platform arranged upon the beam D.v
The operation isms follows: The ends of the beams A A are p aced on the ground, the idler or roller bearing against the wall of the house. The scaii'old is thenraised to the de- "'sired height by means of the rope or chain H. The cross-bar f is then raised by means of the rope or chain 0*,thu's spreading the beams A A apart, the inner ends of the bars A A being cut away and the sockets or bearings of the axis of the pulley a enlarged, the ends of the axis being mounted on pivots, thus allowing a limited lateral movement of the bars A A, so that it is impossible for the scaffold. to descend "until the barf is disengaged. The wedging-barf is held at any point between the bars AA by fastening the rope 6*, which is secured to said barf, to the'cleat d \Vhen it is desired to lower the scaffold, the same is slightly raised in order to loosen the bar 0, which is then allowed to drop, the scaffold then being gradually lowered by means of the rope H.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with two or more laterallyndjustable supporting-beams, connected at their upper ends and carrying a pulley. of a frame arranged upon said beams, and
having a rope or chain adapted to engage said pulley, and abar having a transverse lockingbar secured at its lower end, and provided with a longitudinal slot adapted to receive a bolt or screw projecting from one of the bars of said frame, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the laterally-adjustable beams A A, connected at their upper ends and carrying a pulley, of a frame or scaffold adapted to slide thereon, and having a rope adapted to engage said pulley,'and consisting of the side beams, O G, braces b b and c 0, a beam, D, having an idler or roller,
61, bracing-beams EE', brace or bar F, having a pulley, d, and the locking device G, consisting of the slotted bar a and crossbar f, and a rope or chain for operating said bars, substantially as set forth;
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature 20 in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN THOMAS HASKELL.
