PICTURE PUZZLE.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 718,305, dated January 13, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISAAC H. BLANCHARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture Puzzles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices for displaying pictorial changes or-transformations and may be used to display a change or transformation from any given object to'another, whether living or otherwise. Its objects are, among others,to produce a device of thischaraoter of simple, strong, and durable construction,which may be made'up in various styles and sizes, as desired. It'is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure l is a plan view of the front plate of a picture puzzle, showing my improvements and one of the slides attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a like view of the remaining slide. Fig.

3 is a view of the complete picture puzzle with the picture displayed on the slide of Fig. 1 exposed to view. Fig. tie a like view with the picture displayed on the slide of Fig. 2 exposed. Fig. 5 is a view of a modification.

In order to clearly explain my improvements, I have selected as an example a picture puzzle depicting a change of facial expression which consists of two faces, one displayed upon each slide and numbered as and y,respectively. The face a; is displayed on the slide a, which is provided with a series of diagonal slits a, terminating at their lower ends in downward curves and at their upper ends in upward curves. The face y is dis played upon the slide b, having horizontal slits, each terminatingin adownward curve at one end and an upward curve at the other, the latter being connected by a vertical slit 5 extending to a point near the lower edge of the slide, so that the material at the part Where the face is printed or otherwise displayed is cut into horizontal strips 1), having their free ends provided with points bfl which may be readily passed through the slits of the slide a at the point where the-referenceletter a is located. At the same time that the points of the strips 1) are passed through the slits a the flap 12 formed by the lower horizontal slit and the vertical slit b ,is passed beneath the lower edge of the slide a, and the flap a formed by the oblique out if, is passed back off the'plate b. The two slides are provided with embossed portions a, 6 and 19 which allow the parts to slide more freely and reduce the wear and liability of tearing.

In order to explain the operation of the device, we will suppose that the slide bhas been placed over the slide a in the manner above described and moved upwardly until the lower edge of slide a has reached the bottom of the slit b As the opening 0 of the cover 0 exposes only the straight portions of the cuts, the face g on the flaps b will be entirely concealed behind the slide a. If we now take hold of the pull b which is located in the cut or recess 0 and draw the plate I) downwardly, thelstrips 1), bearing the face y,will come into view and conceal the face 00, displayed on the slide a. The operation may then be reversed by moving the slide 1) to its upward position again, and this may be repeated as often as desired. v The two different positions and faces are illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, which show .the slides placed together and the cover a folded over them.

It is obvious that the slides may be operated in various waysas, for instance, the manner shown in the modification of Fig. 5, where an extra front cover dis provided with an opening coextensive with the opening 0 of the cover 0. This cover may be attached to the upper edge of the slide 1) and folded over and have the plate a secured thereto a short distance from the fold,so that when this cover 01 is raised said slide awill be moved upwardly and the pictures changed. In this manner the pictures are concealed by the rising cover while in a state of change and the transformation thus made to appear more in- 'explicable.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination of aslide provided with openings, a second slide provided with portions adapted to pass through said openings and be concealed behind the portions of the said first'named slide adjacent to the openings,and pictorial or other display matter on each slide, the arrangement being such that the matter on each slide is displayed when the matter on the other slide is concealed.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a slide, plate or strip provided With openings, a second strip provided with partially-detached portions disposed at an angle to the said openings and adapted to be passed therethrough,and pictorial or other display matter on each slide, the arrangement being such that the matter on each slide is displayed when the matter on the other slide is concealed.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination of plates or slides, openings in one of said slides and corresponding partially-detached portions on the other, The said openings and detached portions being disposed at an angle to each other and a cover provided with an opening.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate or slide, openings therein, a second plate or slide, and partiallydetached portions thereon adapted to pass through the said openings and a portion of said second plate adapted to be passed behind the first plate, and pictorial or other display matter on each slide, the arrangement being such that the matter on each slide is displayed when the matteron the other slide is concealed.

6. in a device of the character described, the combination of a plate or slide, openings therein, a second plate or slide and partiallydetached portions thereon adapted to pass through the said openings, a portion of said second plate adapted to be passed behind the first plate and a partially-detached portion on the first plate adapted to be passed behind the second, and pictorial or other display matter on each slide, the arrangement being such that the matter on each slide is displayed when the matter on the other slide is concealed.

7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a slide or plate, openings therein, a second slide or plate, portions on the said second slide or plate which are adapted to pass through said openings and be concealed behind the first plate when the relative positions of the slides are shifted in one direction and to be Withdrawn through said openings and conceal a portion of the first plate when the relative positions of said plates are shifted in another direction, and pictorial or other display matter on each slide, the ar' rangement being such that the matter on each slide is displayed when the matter on the other slide is concealed.

8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate or slide, openings in said slide, a second plate or slide provided with portions corresponding to and adapted to pass through said openings and embossed portions on one of said slides or plates adjacent to the point of contact of the other.

9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate or slide, openings in said slide, a second plate or slide provided with portions corresponding to and adapted to pass through said openings and embossed portions on said slides adjacent to the points of contact.

10. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate or slide, diagonal slits therein having reversely-turned ends, a second plate provided with horizontal strips joined to said slides at one side thereof and adapted to have their free ends passed through the slits, a cover, and an opening in said cover corresponding in width to the straight portions of said slits.

11. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate orslide, openings in said plate or slide, a picture or the like on said slide in juxtaposition to said openings, a second plate or slide and portions partially detached therefrom and adapted to be passed through the openings of the first slide, and a second picture or the like on said partiallydetached portions, each of the said pictures arranged to be exposed by the movement which conceals the other.

12. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate or slide, openings therein, a second plate or slide, portions of the said second plate or slide corresponding to and adapted to be passed through the said openings and be concealed behind a portion of the said first plate and pictures or the like on each of said plates, each picture arranged to be displayed when the other is concealed.

13. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plate, openings therein, a second plate, portions thereon adapted to be passed through said openings and disposed at an angle thereto and pictures or the like displayed on each of said slides, each picture arranged to be displayed when the other is concealed.
