rl`his invention relates to a combination display and information device such as a picture, print, sign or the like equipped .with a calendar, legend card or the like, and has U generally in view to provide a device of this character embodying a construction whereby the information element, such as a calendar or legend card, is movable to concealed and eX-v posed positions relative to the picture or other 19 display element.

A special object of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which may be produced conveniently and economically from sheet material such as .15.' cardboard or the like` and which is strong and durable and unlikely to become damaged by reason of repeated manipulations of the information element to exposed and concealed positions.

According to the invention a base element is'recessed to receive the information element and to serve as a backing for the picture or the like, and in this connection another obliect of the invention is to so combine the display element with the base element that said elements cooperate with each other to aord a substantially7 continuous and smooth support for the picture or the like when the'display element is in a concealed posit-i on withinV the recess of the base element.V

As shown in the drawings, the device co1n prises a backing Il, a base element l() composed of two superposed sheets 27 and 28, preferably glued together, a frame super imposed thereon, and a picture or the like 13 contained within the frame and supported by the base element. Y

Although the parts of the device may be formed from any material or materials desired into any desired size and shape, the base element l0, the backing 11 and the frame 12 are formed preferably from cardboard, or equivalent material, into rectangular shape as shown, and they preferably are formed of equal length and width whereby their edges are disposed flush with one another when they are assembled in superim posed relation.

The frame 12 which may be of any suitable thickness and width., is glued or otherwise suitably fastened against the front face of the front sheet 28 of the base element to enclose the picture or the like 13. and the picture. which is of a sizeto neatly lit within said frame, likewise is Iglued or otherwise fastened against the front face of the front sheet 28 of the base element either at a plurality of points or. preferably. along aline extending acrossv the top thereof, whereby its lower portion may be lifted whenever desired to afford access to the underlying parts of the device. i

Formed through the sheets 27, 28 of the base element is a recess llipfor the reception of a thermometer or the like designated as 16. However. the provision of the recess lei for the reception of the thermometer or the like is optional and it may be provided at any desired location, preferably at some point such that the opening 19 formed through the picture to render the thermometer visible does not mar the picture and such that the thermometer or the like adds to rather than .of similar size and shape, it is preferably of inverted T-shape as shown and includes a relatively wide bottom portion opening through the lower edge of the sheet 27, and

y a narrow leg portion 21 opening at its lower end into the portion 20 medially thereof and extending upwardly into the sheet 27any suitable or desired distance.

The slide 17 which, as aforesaid, corresponds in size and shape to the recess 15, is, therefore, of inverted T-shape and inclusive of a relatively wide bottom portion 22 and a medial upwardly extendinfr leg. portion 23 to be received in the corresponding portions 2O and 21, respectively, of the recess 15 when the slide is in a concealed position. In fact the slide may be and preferably is constituted by the portion of the rear sheet 27 of the base element that is cut therefrom to provide the recess; 15, the same be-` ing movable between the concealed position mentioned beneath the picture 13 and the exposed position illustrated in Figure 3 with the relatively wide bottom portion thereof extending below the lower edge of the base elementand the frame, in which connection it will be observed that the leg portions 20 and 23 of the recess and the slide are of a length such that when the bottom portion 22 of the slide is substantially completely withdrawn from the lower portion 2O of the recess the upper portion of the leg of the slide remains in the portion of the recess to maintain the alinement of the slide with the recess whereby the former may readily be moved upwardly to its concealed position vithin the latter.

The backing 11 is glued or otherwise suitably secured against the rear face of the rear sheet 27 of the base element and serves vboth to stiifen the device and to close the :rear sides of the recesses 14 and 15.

While any suitable means may be provided to limit downward movement ofthev slide beyond its exposed position shown in Figure 3, a simple arrangement to accomplish this purpose is illustrated in the present instance comprising a longitudinally extending slot 24 formed in the leg portion 23 of the slide and a stop element 25 carried by the bach.- ing 11 and projecting into said slot for cooperation with the edge of the slide forming the upper limit of said slot, the stop element being so disposed and the slot being of suoli length that the edge of the slide forming the upper limit of the slot engages the stop element and limits further downward movement of the slide when any desired part of the lower portion 23 thereof becomes exposed at the bottom of the device.

As has already been stated, the front sheet 28 has a recess cut therein at 29 to accommodate the calendar, or other informationelement, 30l suitably mounted on the portion 22 of the slide 17. i

Suitably fastened to the slide 17 and eX- tending Vbelow the bottom portion 22 thereof is a ribbon or tab 26 adording a finger grip element for facility in withdrawing the slide from its frictionally retained concealed position within the recess 15 to its exposed position. Because of the frictional engagement of the slide within recess 15, the stop 25 may, if desired, entirely be dispensed with.

Regarding assembly and disassembly of the slide with and from the base element, it

is apparent that this may be effected at any time after the backing and the frame have been fastened to the base element simply by moving the slide to approximately its exposed position and flexing the upper end of the leg portion 23 outwardly to clear the stop element, whereupon the slide may bc slid either inwardly or outwardly.

VThe device represents an attractive and useful novelty and has special utility as an advertising medium, as the picture 13 may appropriately apply to the goods of a concern giving away or selling the device and the advertisers name as well as other information may be applied to the picture or to some other part of the device.

From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanyingdrawings it is believed that the construction, operation and advantages of the device will lbe clearly understood. It is desired to point out, however, that while a certain specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, the same is readily capable of embodiment in other mechanica-l structures within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

l claim:

1. A display device of the character described comprising a base element composed of front and rear superimposed sheetsof material. the rear sheet having a recess formed therein, a backing fastened against the rear face of said rear sheet and extending across said recess, a slide movable into and from said recess. an information element mounted upon the front face of said slide, the front sheet having a recess to accommodate .said information element, and a picture element superimposed upon said front sheet in cover.- ing relation to the recessV therein.

2. A display device of the character described comprising a baseelement composed of front and rear superimposed sheets of material, the rear sheet having a recess formed therein for the accommodation of a slide element, a slide element movable into and from said recess, an information element mounted on the front face of said slide element, the front sheet having a recess to accommodate said information element, means at the rearl side of the rear sheet extending across the recess in said' sheet in closing relation thereto, and means at the front side of the front sheet extending across the recess therein in closing relation thereto.

3. A display device of the character described comprising a base element composed of front and rear superimposed sheets of material, the rear sheet having a recess formed therein and opening through an edge thereof for the accommodation of a slide element7 a slide element movable into and from said recess, an information element mounted on the front face of said slide element, the front sheet having a recess to accommodate said information element, means at the rear side of the rear sheet extending across and closing the recess therein, means at the front side of the front sheet extending across and closing the recess therein, and means to prevent complete Withdrawal of the slide element from the recess in the rear sheet through the mouth of said recess Where it opens through the edge of the sheet.
