H. FRANK LONGENEOKER, OF SMITHVILLE, AND SAMUEL P. HARTZLER, OF WElLERSVILLE, OHIO.
PENCIL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,909, dated December 30, 1902.
Application filed February l2, 1902. Serial No. 93,807. (No model.)
T0 LEZ whom, t Wtcty concern:
Be it known that we, H. FRANK LONGE- NECKER, a resident of Smithville, and SAMUEL P. HARTZLER, a resident of Weilersville, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil- Boxes, of which the following is a specication.
Our invention relates to pencil-boxes,and is in the nature of a scholars companion or receptacle for containing pencils, penholders, dac., especially designed for the use of pupils, the object of the invention being to furnish a generally-improved device of this character better suited for the intended purposes than other devices of the same class with which we are acquainted. o
The invention may also be found useful to business men, draftsmen, artists, architects, and others and may be readily attached to any ordinary ofce-desk.
The paramount object otour invention is to produce a noiseless pencil-box of simple construction which may be readily attached to or disengaged from the side of any ordinary school-desk now in use.
lThe box is designed to be attached to one of the side frame castings of the desl, beneath and behind the projecting edges of the desk, respectively.
With this end in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination ot parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. A
Referring now to the drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of the box complete attached to one of the side frame castings of a desk, shown in section and having the top or lid of the box opened and resting in its opened position. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line o', b of Fig. l with the iid in its closed position. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the attaching strip or bar for attaching the boxv to -the deskand showing more clearly the rubber pads in its top and bottom edges, against which the front and rear edges of the lid or cover of the box strikes when it is moved to its opened and closed positions. This makes the movements of the lid noiseless.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout all the igures of the drawings.
In the drawings, l designates the bottom or main body portion of the box proper of substantially semicylindrical form and formed with substantially semicircular ends 2.
3 designates pivot-bearings formed in the ends 2 and adapted to receive the trunnions or pivots 4 of the lid, hereinafter described.
5 designates the lid or cover of the box of substantially semicylindrical form and provided with the circular ends t', integral therewith, and provided with centrally -located openings adapted to receive the pivot-pins 4, which pass through the same and into the pivot-bearings 3 of the ends of the bottom or main body portion of the box. The pivotpins 4, however, may be made an integral part of the ends 6 of the lid of the box, if desired.
It will be observed that the lid 5, being larger in cross-section than the bottom or main body portion of the box, is adapted to encircle and pass beneath the same when the lid is opened, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Furthermore, the bottom and lid of the box being of substantially semicylindrical form, and the lid being pivotally mounted and attached to the bottom in the manner shown and described, and no other portion of the lid coming into contact withany portion of the bottom or main body portion of the box, the lid revolves or swings freely on its pivot-bearings, and a noiseless, free, and easy movement is thus provided for in the opening and closing movements of the same.
It will be seen that the ends 6 of the lid are dat on the insides adjacent to the ends of the bottom and that the ontsides are formed with a convex face. Thisis .done for the purpose of making the edges more rounding and adding to the appearance of the box. nates a small handle by means of which the lid is opened and closed.
For the purpose of normally holding the lid in its opened and closed positions the upper outer edge of the lid or cover is formed with 6 onv ICO a heavy edge 8, somewhat Wedge-shaped lin cross-section, as shown'in Fig. 2. This heavy outer edge 8 being heavier than the corresponding rear edge and the lid being pivotally mounted, substantially as shown and described, it will be observed that the lid will tend to retain itself in its opened and closed positions.
9 designates an attaching strip or har for attaching the box to the side of the casting of the desk and, as shown in Fig. 3, is provided with two slots 10 for receiving the bolts l1, which pass through the rear edge of the bottom or main body portion of the box l, through said slots 10, and through a strip or bar 12 on the inside of the vertical arms 13 of the framecasting of the desk. By means of the strips or bars 9 and 12 and the bolts 11 the box is attached to the side of the casting of the desk, and the slots l0 of the strip or bar 9 Will permit of such an adjustment of the parts as to enable the box to be fastened to desks of varying sizes and patterns.
14 designates pads or strips of rubber or some other suitable and convenient material inserted in transverse openings in the top and lower edges of the attaching strip or bar 9. These transverse openings being formed as shown will prevent the pads 14 from being lifted out, and the pads 14 being set up higher than the edges of the strip or bar 9 it will be seen that the rear edge 15 of the lid will strike and rest against the pads in the lower edge of the bar 9 when the lid is opened and that the heavy edge 8 will strike and rest against the pads 14, set in the top edge of the bar 9, when the lid is closed. This will prevent any noise that might arise otherwise from the opening and closing movements of the lid.
The inside of the bottom or main body portion of the box may be lined with cloth, felt, o r some other suitable and convenient materia This box may be attached to any ordinary office-desk or to the plain side walls of any other object, in which case the attaching-bar 9 could be dispensed with if desired and the box be attached directly by means of the bolts 11,surrounded by ferrules interposed between the rear edge to the bottom of the box and the adjacent wall of the object to which it is attached. These ferrules could be surrounded by rubber or some other suitable material and would prevent any noise, as the front and rear edges of the lid would strike against them in its opening and closing movements. Furthermore, it is apparent that pads or strips of rubber might be attached to the front and rear edges of the lid instead of the attachingstrip or other means for securing the box to the object to Which it is attached; but such attachments would be open to certain objections not found in the method of attaching the pads to the attaching strip or bar, as shown.
Vhile we have illustrated and described the best means now known to us for carrying out our invention, We do not wish to be understood as restricting ourselves to the exact details of construction shown, but hold that any slight variation therefrom, such as might suggest itself to the ordinary mechanic, would clearly be comprehended inV the limit and scope of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
