ROBERT S. HOYT, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
BUTTONHOLE ATTACHMENT FOR GARVIENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,421, dated December 23, 1902.
Application filed July 31, 1902.
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, ROBERT S. HOYT, aoitizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ButtonholeAttachments for Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in waistbands for boys trousers of that class with which there are no Suspenders used and where the pantaloons or trousers are buttoned directly to a shirt-waist or jacket.
The main purposes of my present invention therefore are to provide an improved waistband attachment whereby the strain upon the buttons and buttonholes while stooping or bending is materially decreased, and, furthermore, to provide an attachment of the character hereinafter more fully set forth in which the elastics which connect the buttonhole-band with the facing of the attachment are capable of their extreme and greatest stretch and in which the connecting rubber elastics being secured at their extreme upper edges to the said buttonhole-band the said band will receive a straight pull and does not lift or pull the facing of the band. Furthermore, the arrangements and constructions of the parts are such that there can be no collection of dirt between the parts; and, furthermore, the waistband attachment being` sewed fast to the inner portions of the pantaloons by means of straight and coutinuous stitching a great saving of time and labor will be the result to the operator.
The invention therefore consists generally in the combination, with a pair of pantaloons, of a waistband attachment in which the buttonhole band or strip and the facing are connected by means of elastic bands which are sewed fast to the said respective members at their extreme ends to produce an extreme stretch; and the invention consists, furthermore, in the details of the construction and various combinations of the parts, all of Serial No. 117,793. (No model which will be hereinafter more fully described and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim. l
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a pair of pantaloons provided with a waistband attachment embodying the principles of this invention, Figs. 2 and 3 are face views of portions of the waistband attachment and the upper part of a pair of pantaloons, all on an enlarged scale and Fig. 2 representing the parts of the waistband in their stretched positions, while in Fig. 3 the parts of the waistband are illustrated in their normal initial positions. Fig. 4 is a top edge View of the band or upper edge of the pantaloons and the waistband attachment, the latter being l'epresented in a distorted position to clearly illustrate the open portions between the facing and the buttonhole band or strip of the attachment to prevent any collection of dirt between the parts. Fig. 5 is a face View of the rear of the buttonhole band or strip with the elastic bands or straps sewed fast thereto at their eXtreme upper edges; and Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section', on an enlarged scale, said section being taken on line 6 6 in said Fig. 3.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the pantaloons or trousers, and 2 the waistband attachment. The same consists, essentially, of a facing 3, which-is provided with a fold 4 along its upper edge and with a fold 5 along its bottom edge, the same being attached to the inner and upper surface portion of the garment by means of the stitching 6 and 7.
Suitably secured between the fold 5 and the lower portion of the facing 3 by means ot' the stitching 7 and a row of stitching 8 are pairs of upwardly-extending elastic bands or webbing 9, the'said bands 9 extendingin upward directions and being secured at their extreme upper end portions by means of stitching 10 to the buttonhole band or strip 11. This strip 11 is made of two layers of fabric 12 and 13, the same being provided with buttonholes 14 and being secured together by the upper and lower edge binding 15 and 16, as shown.
IOO
The fabric layer 13 is made with suitable slits or openings 17, into which the upper end portions of the elastic bands or webbing 9 extend, the upper ends of said bands or webbing 9 being secured in place between the said fabric layers 12 and 13 by means of the said row of stitching 10, as has been stated and as clearly illustrated in the drawings. From an inspection of the several figures of the drawings it will be clearly evident that the said elastic bands are arranged on each side of a buttonhole, and hence upon each side of the button, whereby the strain upon the said bands is equally distributed, and, furthermore, the said bands or webbing 9 being secured and held at their extreme upper ends a great range of stretch of the said bands 9 will be the result. It will also be understood that owing to the fact that said bands 9 are secured at or near the upper edge of the said buttonhole 'band or strip the facings or layers of said strip will not be forced above the upper edge of the said buttonhole band or strip, and hence no unsightly finish will be produced.
The attachment is very useful in pantaloons or trousers for children, which secures great comfort and ease to wearer. It will also be evident that the attachment can be quickly and easily secured to the buttons of a shirt or waist and can just as readily be unbuttoned therefrom. and continuous lines, the attachment can be manufactured and also attached to the pantaloons or trousers at avery slight additional cost to the manufacturer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with a. pair of pantaloons or trousers, of a buttonhole attachment, comprisin g a facing adapted to be secured against the pantaloons or trousers, a buttonhole-band normally lying upon said facing, said buttonhole-band consisting of two fabric layers 12 and 13 and upper and lower edge bindings, said fabric layer 13 being provided with slits, and elastic bauds secured at their lower end portions to said facing, and the said elastic bands extending in upward directions into said slits and between said fabric layers 12 and 13, and said elastic bands being secured at their extreme upper ends to the extreme upper edge of said buttonhole-band to allow for an extreme stretch of said elastic bands,
substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
The stitching being in straight
