SAMUEL B. EVANS, OF ENID, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
BOX-COVER SUPPORT.
GPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,014, dated December 16, 1902.
Application filed August 26, 1902. fierial No. 121,150.- (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Enid, in the county of Garfield and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented a new and Improved Box-Oover Support, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to devices for holding the cover or lid of cigar-boxes or the like in an open position to display the contents of the box to purchasers.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved box-cover support which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture, easily applied, and arranged to securely hold the box-cover in the desired rearwardly-inclined open position and allow I of convenient removal of the support from an empty box and its reuse on another box.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement as appliedto a cigar-box. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the improvement. Fig. 4 is a rear face view of thesame; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same as applied, the boxcover being shown in section.
The improved box-cover support is made from a single piece of sheet metal, bent to form a U-shaped clip A, adapted to engage the cover B of a box B at one end thereof, at or near the junction of the cover B with the box B. The clip A has its front member A adapted to engage the inner face of the cover B, while the rear member A engages the outer face of the said cover, and the middle portion A of the clip is adapted to abut against one end of the cover. The free end of the rear member A of the clip terminates in a brace A extending outwardly at right angles to the member A and the said brace A is provided with an integral extension A reaching below the bottom of the clip A and having a top portion A extending forwardly under the clip, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3. The front edge A of the extension A is beveledand is adapted to rest against the rear side B of the box B, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2.
The front member A of the clip is preferably somewhat larger than the rear member A so as to permit of placing suitable advertising or other matter on the front face of the saidmernber A, as indicated in Fig. 1.
In using the support it is only necessary for the operator to slip the clip A onto the box-cover B at one end thereof, with the lower end of the clip close to the hinge or connection of the box-cover with the box B. Then by swinging the box-cover B into a rearward position the bevel edge A of the brace extension A will then move in contact with the rear side B of the box to hold the box-cover B in the desired inclined position, as plainly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2,
The support above described can be very cheaply manufactured and conveniently applied to a box-cover to support the same in the desired position, and when the box is empty the support can be readily removed from the cover and reused on the cover of another box, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A box-cover support formed of a single piece 'of material, and comprising a clip bent into approximately U shape, the front member of said clip being relatively larger than the rear member to form an advertising-display surface, a portion of the said rear member being bent outwardly at right angles, forming a brace which extends below the bottom of the clip, the front edge of such extended portion being beveled, and a top portion extending forwardly under the clip from such extension, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL B. EVANS.
