HENRY T. SMITH, OF PAWYTUOKET, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANDARD SEAMLESS WIRE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DISPLAY-CARD.
V SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,351, dated June 7, 1898. Application filed November 11, I897. $eria1 No. 658,124. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. SMITH, of
ing and displaying'small articles of merchandise which require to be protected from contact with objects liable to tarnish or scratch,
, the invention being designed particularly for holding and displaying the bows of watchcase pendants.
The invention consists in the improved device which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents aside view of my improved display-card. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a View similar to Fig. 1, showing the covers of the card displaced to expose the side of the card. Fig. 4 represents a section on line 4 4; of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a side View of a watch-bow.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, or represents a card which is preferably made of a suitable paper-board and of a thickness which is substantially the same as the thickness of an article to be held by the card. Portions of the-card are cut out to form orifices b for the reception of a series of watch-bows c, the walls of said orifices being formed to fit the external contour of the articles to be held by them, so that an article inserted in an orifice b will be retained therein by the frictional contact of its outer surface with the walls of the orifice. To increase the strength of the frictional hold between the card and a watch-bow inserted therein, I provide shoulders I) b at the ends of the curved portions of the walls of the orifices, which bear on the outer peripheries of the watchbows, said shoulders forming abutments or bearings for the ends of the bows, as indicated in Fig. 3.
The orifices I] extend entirely through the card a, so that the watch-bows are exposed on both sides of the card, as shown in Fig. 4,
and can be removed from the card at either side by pressure exerted from the opposite side.
d d represent covers which are connected with the card a in such manner that they can be moved to conceal the sides of the card, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and expose said sides, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the preferred connection between the covers and the card being a tubular rivet or eyelet e. The covers swing in the plane of the card, and when in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 they protect the contents of the card against contact with external objects.
It will be seen that by providing the card with orifices extending entirely through it and providing two movable covers adapted to cover and uncover both sides of the card I provide a holder which is adapted to securely hold and protect the articles inserted in the card and which also permits the articles to be readily pushed out from either side, no prying action being required.
I claim- 1. A display-card having orifices for the reception of articles to be held by the card, said orifices extending through the card, so that articles inserted therein are exposed at both sides of the card, and movable covers hinged to the card at opposite sides thereof, the axis of the hinge being at a right angle to the plane of the card so that the covers will swing in the plane of the card whereby both sides of the card may be simultaneously cov* ered to secure the articles in said orifices, and simultaneously uncovered to permit the displacement of the said articles.
2. A display-card having orifices formed to receive curved articles, such as watch-bows, the said orifices having curved walls formed to bear on the outer surfaces of the watchbows, and shoulders or abutments formed to bear on the ends of said bows.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 5th day of November, A. D. 1897;
HENRY T- SMITH. Witnesses:
ELIZABETH R. W. HIGHLAND, SAMUEL H. ROBERTS.
