HENRY WAHL SMITH, OF NEINFIELD. JERSEY.
JEWELRY-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application led Pebruaryil', 1906. Serial No. 301,604.
To @ZZ 'Lz/hom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY l/VAHL SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newfield, in the county of Gloucester and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved J ewelry-Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to improvements in cases for holding and displaying necklaces or other chains, the object being to provide a device-of this character that will be neat and attractive in appearance and so constructed as to firmly hold on its outer side the portion of a chain to be displayed and having a chamber for receiving the surplus portion of the chain.
Other objects of the invention will appearv in the general description.
I will describe a jewelry-case embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front view of a ewelry-case embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a section o`n the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the body of the case, consisting of wood or other suitable material, and this body portion may be of any suitable contour, the object being to make it attractive. At the center of the body is a chamber 6, having an outward and upward opening 7. Arranged across the body at the front and covering the chamber 6 or forming the front wall thereof is a strip 8, here shown as substantially oval in form, and this strip projects slightly forward from the body, so that a chain may be engaged on the edge thereof, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Attached to the rear side of the body is a plate 9, having at its opposite sides springlingers l0, these lingers passing over the opening 7, but are sufficiently spaced apart to permit a chain to pass between them. These fingers are designed to engage lightly with a necklace or chain, whereby the necklace or chain may be held without injury.
The case may be covered with any desired material-such, for instance, as leather or plush-and it maybemounted on a support l l.
In using the device a portion of the necklace or chain is to be engaged over the top and around the ends of the strip 8, and the surplus portion of the long necklace or chain is to be passed through the opening 7 into the chamber 6, as indicated in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A jewelry-case comprising a body portion having a chamber provided with an outer opening, a projecting strip on the outer side of the body portion and providing the outer wall for said chamber, and a chain-engaging device on said body portion.
2. A jewelry-case comprising a body portion having a chamber, and an outward and upward opening from said chamber, a strip on the front of the body portion and having its edge projected from the body portion, and spring-fingers passing over said outward and upward opening, and adapted to engage with a necklace or chain supported on said strip.
3. A ewelry-case comprising a body portion having a chamber, an outward and upward opening leading to said chamber, a strip on the front of the body portion, and having its edge projected therefrom, a plate attached to the back of the body portion, and spring-fingers extended from said plate over said outward and upward opening, the said fingers being spaced apart.
4. A jewelry-case having a chamber for receiving a portion of a chain, a locking device for the chain, and a part on the front of the casing having a projecting edge, around which a chain may be engaged.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY WAHL SMITH.
