Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AARON MCELVEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stilson, in the county of'Bulloch and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Honey Sample Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates traveling salesmen.

My object is to provide a device of this character, which will be convenient to handle, easy to operate, neat and attractive in appearance, and simple and inexpensive in construction; and one in which the samples of merchandise carried therein will be always exposed to full View without opento sample cases for ing the case.

My device is useful as a sample case for many kinds of merchandise, but is specially adapted for the use of salesmen who are carrying a line of honey in the comb. When used for that purpose, it has the following manifest advantages, as will presently appear fromthe description 1. It protects the samples from being handled.

2. It holds them in the best possible posi- Y tion to keep them from getting broken in traveling.

3. It protects the samples from dust and dirt, and so keeps them looking clean and fresh.

4. It carries different grades of honey side by side, so that the buyer can compare them, and in that way quickly gain a more accurate knowledge of the quality of each grade exhibited.

5. Both sides of each section of comb are fully exposed to view.

6. It advertises the honey wherever carried.

Broadly speaking the invention consists of a suitable box provided with transparent sides; a removable lid with a suitable fastening therefor; and a handle.

The invention consists in certain novel features and combinations of parts, aswill be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

The lid is hinged at one end to the top of one of the end sections 2, by a hinge 6, and at its other end is adapted to be engaged and held in its closed position by ahook 7 carried by the. other end section. The bottom aiid end sections are provided on their inner side faces near their edges, with narrow grooves 8 into which the transparent side sections 4 are received, and the topis also provided on its under, face with corre sponding grooves 9 adapted to fit down over and receive the upper edges of the side sections 4 when the lid is closed.

The lid 3 of the case when'close d reaches from the inner face of one end section to the inner face of theother, with its top flush with the tops of the end sections.

If the lid 3 lay on top of the upper ends of the end sections, the transparent side sections 4 would have to extend up slightly above. the tops of the endv sections in order to enter the grooves 9 on the under side of the lid, to form a good closure atthat point,

and then the projecting upper edge of the glass would be exposed whenever the lid was open; but as it is the tops of the sides 4 are below the tops of the end sections and are for that reason somewhat protected when The bottofh and ends and top of the box are formed preferably of wood, and the sides are formed ofglass or any other suitable transparent material, such for instance as thin sheets of celluloid. I however prefer glass because of its greater transparency.

The side sections 4 being received into the grooves-9 are removable, so that'if one of these sections gets broken, it can be easily replaced with a new one.

The box is usually made just wideenough to snugly receive a section of comb-honey; and long enough and high enough to receive as many sections as may bedesired, so that the different sections of comb can each be viewed from both sides of the box. Of

course, the device may be made wide samples of strained honey, or of molasses, in bottles, as the bottom is suitably provided with holes 10' spaced a short distance from each other, and the bottles are set in these holes. As the lid of the box may be made to rest on top of the bottles, or of their corks, the bottles will all be nicely held in their places in the box and cannot jostle against each other. However, the lid of the box may also be provided with holes 11 corresponding in position to those in the bottom of the box, and of a size to receive the tops of the bottles or the corks, in which case the bottles would have to be a little higher, or the height of the box would have to be a little less than when the top of the box is not provided with holes. As a rule ,however, I prefer to make the box just high enough to snugly receive a section of honey, and when bottles are to be used for displaying strained honey or molasses, or fluids of any kind, the height ofthe bottles can be adapted to the height of the case.

Of course, there is no special objection to making the interior of the case higher than the width of a section of comb, if for any reason whatever it should be found desirable to do so; but usually that would only be adding that much to the size of the box.

Providing the box with holes for the reception of bottles, does not in the least in terfere with its use for displaying sections of honey in the comb, so that the same box can be used first for one and then the other.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described, comprising bottom and end sections; a removable top section; and transparent side sections, the bottom section being provided with holes adapted to receive and hold bottles, said holes being spaced apart to hold the bottles out of contact with each other.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a bottom section; parallel end sections secured thereto; a removable top section provided with means for engaging the end sections; and removable parallel side sections formed of transparent material, said top and bottom sections being each provided with an equal number of holes, each hole in one section being in axial alinement with the corresponding hole on the other section, the holes in the bottom section being Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. 0.

of a size to fit the bottoms of the bottles, and the holes in the top being of a size to receive the necks of the bottles, the holes being spaced from each other to hold the bottles against contacting with each other when the device is handled.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a comparatively narrow bottom section; parallel end sections of the same width secured thereto and extending at right angles therefrom, said sections being provided with means forremovably engaging oppositely disposed side sections; parallel side sections formed of transparent material and received into said means, and also extending at right angles to the bottom section; and a removable top provided with means for engagement with the end sections and adapted to overlie the removable side sections and hold them in position on the bottom and end sections.

4. A device of the character described, comprising a bottom section and parallel end sections secured thereto and extending at right angles therefrom; a removable top section hinged at one of its ends to the top of one of the end sections and provided at its other end with means for removable engagement with the other end section, said bottom and end sections having grooves at their sides for receiving oppositely disposed side sections; and transparent side sections removably received into said grooves, said top section having grooves arranged to register with the grooves in the end sections and adapted to fit down over and receive the top edge of the side sections when the top section is closed down in operative position.

5. A device of the character described, comprising a bottom section; end sections secured thereto; a removable top section provided with means for engaging the end sections, the top and bottom sections being formed of comparatively thick material and provided with opposing bores on their inner opposing faces, said bores extending partly through said sections; and removable side sections formed of transparent material.
