UNITED IMPROVEMENT IN SPOOL-THREAD CASES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,107, dated July 18, 1871.

To all lwhom it may concern:

Beit known that I, WILLIAM S. PHILLIPS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented \a new and useful Spooled- -Thread Case 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specilication.

Figure l is a perspective view of my improved spooled-thread case with the drawers open. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same taken in the line x x, Fig. l.

My invention has for its object to provide a case containing a series of sliding drawers for the reception of spooled threads, which shall ex- -hibit, through the closed front of each drawer,

samples of the kind or color contained in each compartment. rlhe invention consists, first, in providing the front of the drawers which contain the spools with a glass panel or plate, behind which the sample spools are held in position to -exhibit tle color or kind contained in their respective compartments. It consists, secondly, inthe construction of the bottoms of the drawers to secure and hold in place spools containing dif` ferent-colored threads.

I am aware that sliding drawers for spooled threads have been constructed with low fronts to exhibit the sample spools at the front of their respective divisions, but these are objectionable from the fact that the addition of a glass door to the case outside the drawers is necessary to exclude the dust from the thread.

By my invention the expense of a glass door is avoided, as the drawers themselves, while they permit the exhibition of sample spools, effectually exclude the dust.

In the accompanying drawing, A is a closed case, containing at its front a series of sliding drawers, B. The onts of the drawers C D are slotted or cut out longitudinally, and a iiat-piece of glass, E, placed behind the slots from the interior of the drawers, as shown. The bottom of the drawer C is provided with a series of transverse corrngations, F, of a size corresponding with the diameter of the spools to be placed therein. At right angles to the corrugations a series of parallel strips, Gr, is let into the bottom to form compartments of the requisite length to receive spools of thread. The front of this drawer is inclined, as shown at H, to hold the sample spools against the glass plate E. The bottom of the drawer D is formed with a series of circular recesses, I, in which the ends of the spools are set. These recesses are arranged in rows from front to rear, and the sample spools are placed behind the glass plate at the front of each row. A third form of drawer is shown at J, Fig. 2, having a longitudinal concave recess, K, formed in its front, covered by a curved or concave-convex plate of glass, L. This plate is held in place by means of its lianges m fitting in corresponding grooves formed at the top and bottom of the. recess K, and is applied by being pushed through the end of the drawer, as will be readily understood. One end of the drawer is provided with a block, N, adapted for removal, by means of the screw shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, for the insertion of sample spools behind the panel. The bottom of this drawer is corrugated, as in the drawer C, but not provided with the dividing-strips.

By my invention the sample spools are held within the drawers at the front of their respective divisions, and the quality or color of the silk or thread contained in each compartment readily observed before the drawer is opened. The spools are, Inoreover, protected from ldust and dirt without the addition of a door to the front of the case.

'Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A spooled-thread case, having the recessed or slotted fronts of its sliding' drawers provided with Ilat or ciuved glass plates, for the purpose specilied.

2. The sliding drawers of a spooled-thread case, provided with recessed or corrugated bottoms, substantially as described, for the purpose specifled.
