ADVERTISING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,886, dated December 16, 1902.

Application filed April 7, 1902. Serial No. 101,798. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN F. SMILEY,a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of'Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to advertising devices adapted to be actuated by the opening and closing of the door to attract the attention of the person entering.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be a distinct novelty of its kind, simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.

With this and other objectsin view the in vention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View illustrating my invention applied to a glass door, the door being shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the position of the parts when the door is opened, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view illustrating the sounding device.

Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the glass door, and 2 the door-frame. 3 denotes a casing which may consist of two par-ts made of pasteboard or other material, if desired, connected together to permit of the moving therebetween of an advertising-card 4. This card may be suitably inscribed, decorated, or ornamented and has attached to it the lower end of a cord 5, the upper end of which passes through a'guide-eye 6, secured to the door, and is finally securely attached to the doorframe, as shown at 7. This clapper is formed with a tappet-lug- 11, which is adapted to be operated by a tappet device 12, carried by the advertising-card, so that upon the movement of the said card the tappet device, which is in the form of a corrugated strip, engages the tappet-lug and causes the clapper to vibrate against the opening door and attract the attention of the person entering. The device may be made of any suitable material and may be attached in any suitable manner. As shown in the drawings, I have illustrated cords or wires 13 connected to the corners of the casing for attaching it to the door.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended eX- planation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is

In an advertising device of the character described, the combination with a casing and a card adapted to be'inclosed within said casing, of a vertically-disposed tappet device secured to the face of the card, a spring-clapper having one end secured within the casing and having the other end projecting through the open end thereof in position to strike against the door to which the device is adapted to be secured and provided with a lug adapted to be engaged by the tappet device in the upward and downward movement of said card, acord attached to said card and to the door-frame and adapted to be operated by the swinging of the door, and a spring connected to said casing and to the lower end of the card for returning it to its normal position.
