PATENT OFFICE.
LEE RAMBO? GAYNOR, OF COON RAPIDS, IOWA.
ADVERTiSlNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,177, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed May 31, 1902. Serial No. 109,679. (No model.)
To (all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, LEE RAMBO'W GAYNOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Coon Rapids, in the county of Carroll and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Advertising Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to display an advertisement at a desired point by its flexible connection with a movable door and attract attention to the advertisement by joining the placard on which the advertisement is placed with a grotesque figure that will be fully exposed, along with the advertisement, when the door is moved in the act of opening it, the closing of the door permitting a return movement of the advertisement and a merging of the grotesque figure into an unrecognizable form.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described, and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a storewindow, an adjacent door, and the improvement arranged in the window and adapted to be operated by the opening and closing of the door. Fig. 2 is a side View, on an enlarged scale, of the grotesque figure and sign shown in Fig. 1, the grotesque figure in this view being shown in sections.
As an illustration of a means for carrying into effect the invention A represents a showwindow of a shoe-store, and I3 a door guarding an entrance to the store-room, said door, as shown, opening inwardly. A grotesque figure 3, which may be in the form repre sented or any othersuitable shape,is arranged in the window, as shown in Fig. 1, being connected with the door B by a wire, cord, or
chain 4. The flexible connection dis loosely engaged with ring-eyeso and 5 or like sup ports at the top and bottom of the window which supports are concealed in or behind the window-casing, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. From the support 5 the flexible connection 4 trends toward a like support 6,
that it loosely engages, and may likewise engage the similar supports 8 and 9, the latter being positioned near the edge of the door B upon the door-casement O, and the extension of the flexible connection L is secured upon the door by any preferred means.
In the sectional view of my invention shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings the foldable figure 3, representing a snake or fish, may be held in contracted condition (as indicated in dotted lines) at one side of the show-window A by the tension of an elastic cord 10, which cord extends longitudinally in the body of the figure 3 and at one end is secured to the ringeye 5 at the lower corner of the window-casement A. There may be the representation of the head of a fish, snake, or other longbodied reptile on the end of the figure 3 that is farthest from the side of the easement, and on the nose of this head 3 a display-disk or other sign-board 11 is secured, so that when the body of the figure 3 is extended partly across the window-space the advertisement on the disk 11 will be conspicuously exposed, appearing to be held by the figure. Upon the disk 11 an end of the flexible connection 4 is secured, and thence the connection 4 extends to the ring-eye 5 or equivalent support and thence to the door, as shown in Fig. 1. The flexible connection 4: is of such length that when the door is wide open the grotesque figure will be fully elongated.
In operation a pull upon the flexible connection 1 will correspondingly draw upon the extensible figure 3 and by stretching the elastic cord 10 simulate the outward crawling movement of the reptile or fish, which will attract attention to the figure and also to the advertisement connected therewith.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a suitable sup port, of a grotesque figure, signs carried by said figure, a flexible connection fast at one end of the figure and at the opposite end to a door, and means for supporting the flexible connection so that the moving of the door in one direction will cause the figure to present an unrecognizable and unnatural appearance, and the moving of the door in the opposite direction will cause it. to present its normal appearance, as specified and for the purpose I mass to form the body of the grotesque figure set forth.
2. An extensible advertising device normally contracted into a shapeless mass and adapted when elongated to form a grotesque but recognizable figure; a sign connected with the head of said figure; a flexible connection joined at one end to the sign; and
means for pulling on the flexible connection for the simultaneous display of the sign and figure.
3. An extensible advertising device, comprising a grotesque figure normally contracted into a shapeless'mass and having a head; an elastic cord extended from the head lengthwise through the body of the figure to hold it in its normally contracted condition; means for holding an end of the cord; an advertising-sign at the head of the figure and connected thereto and a flexible connection attached by one end to the sign; a pull on said connection serving to extend the shapeless and display the sign.
4. An advertising device comprising a grotesque figure that is extensible and retractible and having a head; an elastic cord connected at one end with the head and extending therefrom lengthwise through the body of the figure; means for holding the other end of the cord; van advertising-sign at the head of the figure and connected thereto; and a flexible connection attached by one end to the sign and extending in a direction opposite to that of the other cord; a pull on said connection serving to extend the body of the grotesque figure and display the sign.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
