Description

- D. LOGKB.
BANNER.
Patented May 2. 1893 m: nomus FETERS ca. morn-um. wAsumcTon u c TATES N IT ATENT BANNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,423, dated May 2, 1893. Application filed July 28, 1892. Serial No. 441,456, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
. Beit known that I, DELMONT LOCKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Banners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to banners for political or campaign uses. These banners are usually suspended from a rope hung across a street and consist of cord netting which can be seen through and which do not obstruct the passage of air. These banners bend freely in all directions. 7
My invention relates to a banner to be carried by hand suspended from a pole or which can be hung upon the wall of a dwelling or other building.
My invention consists in a banner having a flexible body portion composed of parallel strips of thin wood or reed connected together at intervals by interlacing cords or bands of fabric. This body portion is flexible lengthwise and can bend or be rolled up but it is rigid or unyielding widthwise and the wood strips coming close together it cannot be seen through and what may be behind the banner not being seen, does not detract from the banner. Upon the face of the flexible body portionis secured a painted orlithographed sheet of paper, canvas or the like, said sheet being the portrait or representation of one or more political candidates or the representation of a figure and preferably cut out on the profile thereof. The lower edge of the flexible portion I prefer to make with a border or fringe, preferably of twisted rope of ornamental form, and across the lower part of the flexible portion and between the representation of the political candidate and the border I prefer to place an ornamentally disposed strip 'of tricolored bunting or other fabric, the Whole being a new article of manufacture.
My banner can be rolled up for storage or transportation and unrolled at pleasure.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents my improvement by an elevation, and Fig. 2 shows the detailed construction of the flexible portion.
a represents the flexible portion. This is composed of parallel strips of thin wood or the bar I) is threaded through these rings a and a chain or cord 0 whose ends are connected-to the ends of said bar I) is employed to suspend the banner from a pole for out door use or from, a nail driven in a wall within doors.
01 represents a painted or lithographed sheet of paper, canvas orthe like, also flexible, upon one face of which is the portrait or representation of-one or more political candidates or the representation of a figure, and I prefer to cut the said sheet around the outline or profile of the head and bust of said figure or portrait to remove the surplus material, and this is secured upon the face of the flexible portion a and the surface of the flexible portion at around the head maybe shaded or ornamented in any desired manner.
Along the lower edge of the flexible portion a I have shown and prefer to use an orna mental border or fringe e composed of twisted rope or similar material, and above this and below the portrait or figure cl and widthwise across the flexible portion I prefer to place a strip of tri-colored bunting or other fabric f ornamentally disposed, the form shown being one of several in which said fabric can be arranged. 1
I do not limit myself to the use of the strip of fabric f or the border 6, as the same may be changed or dispensed with at pleasure.
I distinctly disclaim such banners as have been made of cord netting with runners for a suspending rope, the portraits of political candidates as well as lettering and ornamentation being sewed to the netting.
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a banner consisting essentially of a flexible portion acomposed of parallel strips of thin wood connected by longitudinal interlacing crossing cords or bands and a sheet of paper, canvas or the like, securedupon the face thereof and Whose surface is painted or lithographed to represent a portrait or figure, and a bar suspending device at the upper edge thereof,
substantially in the manner and for the pure and fabric strip fisubstantially in the manposes set forth. ner and for the purposes set forth. I0
