Burglar A|arm. No. 55.165. Patented May 29, 1866.

PATENT FFICE.
A. J. ROSS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED BURGLAR-ALARM.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,165, dated May 29, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, A. J. Ross, of Rochester, in the county oi' Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful. Improvement in Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure lis an elevation of a door with my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2, a perspective view of one corner of the door and casing, with the door in the actof opening and striking' the alarm; Fig. 3, a diagram showing a plan of the alarm connected with the door and casing.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the igures.
My invention consists in the combination of a portable alarm-bell with a corrugated camplate, so arranged that said bell can be disengaged during the day by simply changing the position, and so that the cam-plate will cause a succession of sounds as the door orwindow is opened.
As represented in the drawings, A indicates a door, and B its casing.
The alarm-bell O is of ordinary construction and form, and is connected by a stem, a, with a base-plate, D, which is provided at the top and bottom with longitudinal slots b c o. In the upper slot rests a screw, d, and in either one oi' the lower ones a screw, f. By this means it will be perceived that the base plate maybe set toward the door, asin black lines,
Fig. 1, or from it, as in red lines in the same igure.
Inside the bell rests a hammer, E, connected with the base-plate by a spring, g. With the hammer is also connected a stem, h, extending outward a suitable distance, and having a bend, i, at the extremity.
With the edge of the door, in a position corresponding with the bell,is connected a corrugated cam-plate, G, the ends of the same being bent around so as to be screwed to the door in such a position as to brace iirmly, as indicated.
The face of the plate is provided with any suitable number of corrugations or cams 7c lc, with which the bend t' of lthe stem h engages.
The operation of the device thus arranged is apparent. When the bell is set toward the door, as indicated by the black lines, the stem h engages with the corrugations k 7c, and the alarm will be sounded as the door is opened; but when the bell is set back, as indicated by red lines, the stem falls below the cam-plate and does not engage with it, and the door then swings free without sounding the alarm. Thus at night the alarm can be set and in the morning disengaged by simply shifting the position of the base-plate D, which is but a moments labor.
This device is of an exceedingly simple and effective character. The bell is attached by simply driving the two screws d f and the cam-plate in a similar manner. It can be connected with any door without trouble. It can be carried easily by a traveler and applied to a door in a few minutes, being thus of a portable character; or it can be made a tiXture in a house or shop. In theday-time the bellcan be disengaged, and at evening set for use. Thus arranged the device is much more et'- fective than those ordinarily used, since the alarm given is more prolonged. A burglarin opening a door naturally does so as slowly and easily as possible. In this action the first movement strikes one alarm. It he still persists, the second movementwill strike a second alarm, Ste., and he can have no hope of entering without arousing the household.
This arrangement is far preferable to those complicated devices connected with the knobs and locks of doors or operated by wires that require a complicated attachment.
It is obvious that the device can be connected with windows as well as doors.
I am aware that various plans of burglaralarms have been known, and I claim only the special device here presented.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is-
The portable burglar-alarm made up of the combination of the alarm-bell C and baseplate D, engaged and disengaged by simply changing the position, as described, and the cam-plate G, provided with a series of corrugations or cams, 7c lc, tor giving a succession of alarms, as herein set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
