Specification of Letters Patent. i
Patented Sept. 14.., 1909.
Application filed March 29, 1909. Serial No. 486,420.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT E. L. PARNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gainesville, in the county of Hall and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful findow-Screen, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of the invention are,'generally, the provision in a merchantable form, of a device of the class above described which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, facile in operation and devoid of complicated parts; specifically, the provision of a frame, and a screen designed to be assembled with the frame in such a manner that the said screen may yield when the parts of the frame are movedpivotally upon each other; the provision in a novel and improved form, of resilient means for maintaining the screen construction normally in alinement; other and further objects being made manifest hereinafter, as the description of the invenh tion progresses.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, delineated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in that portion of this instrument wherein patentable novelty is claimed for certain distinctive and peculiar features of .the de` vice, it being understood, that, within the scope of what hereinafter is thus claimed, divers changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the in vention.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to denote corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows my invention in perspective; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof, the device being mounted in a window casing.
In carrying out my invention I provide primarily a frame comprising a pair of open sections 1. The adjacent ends of the sections 1 carry plates 2 which are upbent at their extremities to form overlapping ears 3 in which is mounted a pintle 4.
Disposed between the ears 3 and about the pintle 4 is a spring 5, the ends 6 of which bear upon opposite plates 2. A
Disposed upon the faces of the sections 1 is a screen 7 held in place by binding strips upon their edges, to free a portion of theV edge of the screen and to form a shoulder 10 to engage the edge of the screen. By-this construction a portion 11 of the screen 1s left free at its edge and unattached to the' sections 1. By thus leaving a portion of the edge of the screen 7, adjacent the pivotal connection between the sections, free, the said screen will spring away from the faces of the sections l when the frame is bent as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. By this construction the screen is not strained or creased, and the screen is further protected, and its life' is materially lengthened by the fact that, as shown in Fig. 2, the screen is transversely bulged in line with the hinge connection between the sections 1, as denoted by the numeral 12.
In Fig. 2 the numeral 15 denotes the casing of a window, the numeral 16 denoting the lower sash. When it is desired to mount the device of my invention in the top of the window frame, the outer sash may be pushed downward, the screen being inserted above the upper sash when in its depressed or lowered position. In order that my device may readily be used under such circumstances I groove the remote edges of the sections 1 as denoted by the numeral 14;, in order to receive the sash cord 17 whereby the upper sash is suspended. 'Ihe device may readily be folded partially in order that its remote edges may be inserted into the casing of the window, and when the sections 2 are released, the spring 5 willvcause them to assume positions substantially in alinement with each other, the device automatically *assuming the position shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is :f
1. In a device of the class described, an open frame comprising separate sections arranged to be brought into lalinement a hinge uniting the sections and having its pivot member spaced from the frame, and a screen mounted upon the sections; a portion of the screen adjacent the hinge union between the sections being unattached to the sections, and being bulged transversely of the screen when the sections are in alinement.
2. In a device of the class described, an open frame comprising separate sections arranged to be brought into alineinent a hinge uniting the sections and having its pivot member spaced :from the frame; and a screen mounted upon the sections; a portion of the screen adjacent the hinged union between the sections, being bulged transversely of the screen when the sections are in alinement.
3. A device of the class described comprising a pair of separate sections arranged to be brought into alinement; hinges uniting the sections and having their pivot members spaced from the sections; a binding strip mounted on each section and arranged to extend upon a hinge; a screen disposed between the binding strips and the sections, the strips at their adjacent ends being cutaway in their edges, to free a portion of the edge of the screen, and to form a shoulder to engage the edge of the screen, the screen being bulged transversely in alinement with the free portions of the edges thereof when the sections are in alinement.
