DOOR OR WINDOW SCREEN ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,514, dated March 31, 1891.

Be it known that I, MARIAM A. BALDWIN, of Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Door and \Vindow Screen Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved attachment specially designed for door and window screens to render the same impervious to wind, dust, and cold, and which is simple and durable in construction, cheaply manufactured, and readily applied.

The invcntion consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the. same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of theimprovement as applied to screen-doors, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is alike view of the same as applied in a door-casing. Fig. 4: is an enlarged sectional plan view of the improvement, the door being in position; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional plan view of part of the i1nprovement.

The improved door or window screen attachment consists, principally, of a casing A, made of a suitable fabriesuch as ticking, canvas, heavy sheeting, felt, &c.suffieiently large to receive the window-screen or a screendoor B, one side of the casingbeingleft open for the introduction of the door or screen.

On one side of the casing A are formed suitable openings O to permit the hinges D to pass through the said openings to be fastened to the door or window casing. The ends and sides of the casin g A are formed into flanges E, which serve as weather-strips to fold into the door-casing F and the sill G, as is plainly illustrated in Fig. 3, so that the said flanges bend over and render the entire door or window wind and dust proof.

After the door or window is inserted in the casing A strips H, of wood or other suitable material, are placed on opposite sides of the Serial No. 348,350. (No model.)

I prefer for fastening the several strips to-i gether split nails I, as illustrated in Fig. 5, adapted to be driven through one of the strips on one side, then passing through the sides of the casing A, through the wire-netting of the door or window screen, and through the strip on the opposite side of the casing, after which the split ends are clinched, as is plainly shown in the said figure, thus securely holding the strips in place. The strips H are preferably moldings and arranged in squares or other suitable figures, the ends being jointed together in miter fashion, as is illustrated in Fig. 1.

It will be seen that when'the casing is applied on a door or window screen and the door or screen is closed the flanges E render the door weatherproof. At the same time the sides of the casing prevent wind, dust, &e., from passing through the wire-netting to the inside of the house. It will further be seen that in summer time the casing can be readily removed from the screen orwindow, folded away until it is again desired to use the same. \Vhen the strips II are applied, as previously described, and it is desired to remove the easing, the clinched ends of the nails I are bent straight and the nails are removed, so that the strips become detached from the casing and the wire-netting.

Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt- 1. The combination, with a door or window screen, of a fabric casing inclosing the said screen and strips secured to the screen on opposite sides thereof and outside of the casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with a door or window screen, of a fabric casing inclosing the said screen and havingflanges on its ends and sides, said flanges forming weather-strips, and strips secured to the opposite sides of the screen split nails I for securing the strips in place, substantially as described.
