To all whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, MYRON H. RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of llli nois, have invented a new and useful Automatic Door-Sign, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to automatic doorsigns.

The object of the invention is to provide a door-sign device which is simple in construction and arrangement and automatic in operation, whereby the act of opening a door, shutter, or the like operates to display a sign.

The inventiouIconsists substantiallyin the construction, combination, location, and arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawings, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings and to the various views and reference-signs appearing thereon, Figure 1 is a viewin per spective, showing an automatic door-sign embodying the principles of my invention applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a detached detail view showing means for adjusting the signoperating connection. Fig. 3 is a detached detail view in perspective of the door-sign detached.

In carrying out my invention I propose to apply a door-sign to a door, shutter, or similar hinged or pivoted part and so connected as to be thrown into displaying position by the act of opening the door, shutter, or the.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, reference-sign A designates a door, shutter, or the like, upon the side lintel of which is pivotally mounted, as at B, a swinging signboard, card, or device designated by reference-sign O and adapted to carry any desired legend. Suitably hinged or pivoted to the door-casing above the door is a bail D in such relation to the top edge of the door that when the door is closed said bail will hang down over the front of the door, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1; but when the-door is opened the act of opening the same rocks or swings the pivoted strap or bail upwardly, as

at a convenient point with reference to the pointB of pivotal connection ofthe sign-board to the door. This cord or other connection is arranged, as indicated -in Fig. 2, to pass through a tightening-plate G and thence through the elongated link E, the other end being secured, as indicated at H, to the tighteuing-plale G.

The operation of the device will be readily understood and may be described as follows: When the door is closed, the sign 0 hangs vertically downward, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, being hidden from the view of the person opening the door from the rear side. When, however,the door is opened, the movem ent thereof toward open position causes the upper edge of the door to engage bail D and rock or swing the same upwardly, thereby drawing on the connection F,and hence swinging the sign 0 about its point of pivotal connection B to the door, and hence raising the free end of such sign so that said sign will project or extend transversely across the door, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 1, and hence displaying the sign on the back side thereof through the transparent or glass panel J of the door. In order to prevent the sign from swinging too far upwardly, a stop K may be suit-ably connected to the sign and arranged to engage a stop-pin L, fixed in a convenient part of the door adjacent to the edge thereof, as clearly shown.

If desired, the sign-board or device 0 may bear a signlegend on both sides thereof, one to be disclosed through the glass or transpar ent panel of the door and the other being displayed on the opposite side of the sign-board.

By providing the tightening plate G, through which the cord or other connection F passes, as indicated in Fig. 2, lam enabled to lengthen or shorten the cord or other connection F to accom modate the sign at any desired height.

By providing an elongated link E, I avoid the danger of such link being wedged against the upper edge of the door during the opening movement of the door, said link riding freely along bail D, being pushed therealong by the upper edge of the door.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I provide an exceedingly simple arrangement, the'parts being few and capable of being applied with facility to any door, and the entire apparatus may be compactly arranged in small compass for transportation or shipment through the mail or otherwise.

Having now set forth the object and nature of myinvention and a construction embodying the principles thereof, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an automatic door-sign, the combination with a sign-board or other device pivotally connected to the door, a bail pivotally mounted adjacent to the door and arranged to be engaged by the door in opening to rock or swing the same, and connections between said bail and sign, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In an automatic'door-sign, the combination with a door, of a sign-board or the like pivoted thereto, a bail pivotally mounted adjacent to the door and arranged to be engagged and rocked or swung by the door when the latter is opened, connections between said sign-board and bail, and a stop for limiting the movement of the sign-board, as and for the purpose set forth.

In an automatic door-sign, the combination with a door, of a sign-board or similar device pivotally connected thereto, abail pivotally mounted adjacent to the door and arranged to be engaged and rocked or swung by the door when the latter is opened, a link' 4:. In an automatic door-sign, the combina-v tion with a door, of a sign-board pivotally mounted thereon, a bail pivotally mounted adjacent to the door and arranged to be engaged and rocked or swung when the door is opened, connections between said bail and board, and means for adjusting the length of such connections, as and for the purpose set forth. 1

5. In an automatic door-sign, the combination with a door, of a sign-board pivotally mounted thereon, a bail pivotally mounted adjacent to the door and arranged to be engaged and rocked or swung when the door is opened, a link loosely mounted 'upon said bail, a cord connected at one end to said board, and an adjusting-plate through which said cord passes, the end of said cord after passing through said link being secured to said plate, as and for the purpose set forth.
