Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES N. FARLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in folding beds and has for its principal object the construction of a portable folding cabinet which will occupy a minimum space when closed, and which will present a pleasing appearance both when opened and when closed.

Another object is to provide improved means for holding the hinged members in position to form head and foot board, as well as to support the spring carrying frame.

Another object is to provide an improved means for holding the bedding in place.

With the above mentioned and other ob jects in view it will be seen that my inven tion comprises certain new and novel arrangements and combination of parts as are herein described and shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

It will of course be understood that various changes in form, proportions and details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in front elevation showing the bed in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective showing the bed open and the bedding retaining means fastened as just before folding. Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the line 33 Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a similar view with the bed in its open position. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional View showing manner of supporting the spring frame on the hinged end members. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of one corner of the bed.

Denoting corresponding parts by the same numerals of reference, the bed consists of a substantially rectangular frame 1, open on the back, and at the front provided with the hinged L-shaped doors 2, each door consisting of a narrow upright strip 3 hinged to the side of frame 1 and at its lower end provided with the angularly extending portion a. The latter is of sufiicient length so that the two extensions meet at the center of the frame, closing the lower portion thereof. Thus when these doors are closed there is left a rectangular open space between the strips 3 and above the extensions 4:, which is closed in the manner hereinafter described.

A spring supporting structure 8 is provided consisting of longitudinal members 5, which are connected by the cross members 6 and which carry any preferred form of spring. This frame fits within frame 1 and carries a bracket 7 on each end attached to cross members 6 adjacent the rear end thereof. These brackets are provided with bolts or pins 7 which are seated in the sides of frame 1 thus providing a pivotal connection between frame 1 and the spring supporting frame 8.

Adjacent the front of frame 8 on the underside of members 6 are attached strips 9 having an angular extending point 10 which is adapted to engage the angularly disposed point 11 of a similar strip 12 attached to the inside of doors 2, thus these clips support the weight of frame 8 and at the same time hold the doors 2 from opening away from the said frame. The movement of these doors is also limited by the folding check 13, but the latter is adapted more to position the door when opening than to stand the continuous strains which take place in a structure of this character. On the underside of frame 8 is attached a panel 14 or other ornamental frame which is adapted to fill the rectangular space in the upper part of doors 2. This panel is attached to member 5 and to certain spacing blocks 15.

Pivotally mounted on frame 8 adjacent the rear thereof is a light frame for retaining the bedding; which consists of a light U-tube 18 over which is stretched a network 19 of wires or other flexible material. On the front side of frame 18 is attached straps 20, which are adapted to pass through staples 21 in frame 8 and by means of a buckle 22 or other similar device fasten the frame 18 to the front of frame 8 and hold all the bedding in position. It will be obvious that when open this frame 18 is adapted to rest in an upright position against the lower edge 25 of the top 3 and to serve as a back to the bed.

The panel 14 projects slightly from the front longitudinal member 5, and in the upper part of frame 1 is provided a stop strip 2 1 to limit the movement of the bed in an upright position. The joints between 14 and the doors 2 are covered by ornamental strips 26 and a latch 27 is provided on one of these doors, provided with a handle on the outer face of the door and having a finger or lever on the inner face of the door which when properly turned by the handle is adapted to contact with inside surface of panel 14 thus holding all parts closed.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent is 1. A folding bed comprising a rectangular cabinet, doors hinged thereto adapted to close said cabinet, a spring supporting frame pivotally mounted in said cabinet, means carried by said frame for holding bedding thereon, other means carried by said frame and adapted to coact with means carried by said doors to support said frame when in its open position.

2. A folding bed comprising a rectangular cabinet, L-shaped doors hinged thereto, forming a rectangular open space in the top thereof, a spring supporting frame pivotally mounted in said cabinet, a panel carried by said frame and adapted when folded to close said rectangular space between said doors; a rectangular frame pivotally mounted in said supporting frame, said rectangular frame being covered with netting to hold bedding to said last mentioned frame and means for securing the free side of said rectangular frame.

3. A folding bed comprising in combination, a cabinet, a spring supporting frame pivotally mounted in said cabinet, and a frame pivotally mounted on said supporting frame and adapted to hold the bedding thereon, said last mentioned frame being also adapted to form a back for the bed when the spring supporting frame is lowerect.

4. A folding bed comprising in combination, a rectangular cabinet, doors hinged to said cabinet at each end thereof and adapted to close the same, said doors being partially cut away in their upper portions to form a substantially oblong space when the same are closed, a spring supporting frame pivotally mounted in said cabinet, and a panel carried by said frame and adapted to register with said opening when the frame is raised.
