HENRY W. HELGESON, ()F BOMA, WISCONSIN.
TOBACCO-BALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,065, dated December 2, 1902.
Application filed June 24,1902. Serial No. 113,000. (No model.)
To all whom it ntcty concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WV. HELGESON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boma, in the county of Crawford and State of WViscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Balers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tobacco-presses; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple, cheap, yet efficient, and durable press in which tobacco may be quickly and easily compressed in packages and the compressed bundle readily removed.
It has for a further object to provide for adjustment of one end of the press to vary the size of the package as may be desired. The press has one side movably mounted, preferably hinged, so as to be turned down after the package or bale has been compressed to facilitate its removal. Novel means are provided for holding the movable side in position, and novel means are also employed for compressing the bale and holding the presserboard or plunger against retrograde movement.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the nu merals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved press. Fig. 2 is a substantially central vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a substantially central vertical crosssection. Fig. 4 represents details of a portion of the movable end and its cooperating side, showing the means of adjustment. Fig. 5 is an elevation of one of the holding-clamps for the movable side. Fig. 6 is a top plan thereof.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings, 1 designates the bottom, 2 a fixed side, 3 the fixed end, 4 the movable end, and 5 the movable side, of the press. The movable side 5 is hinged in any suitable manner, as at 6,
with a staple or the like 8 and, further, with another staple or analogous device 9, disposed at the desired distance from the movable end 4, as seen clearly in Fig. 1. The front edges of the ends 3 and l-that is, the edges nearest the movable side 5-are provided with vertical grooves or channels 10 upon opposite sides to form ways or guides in which are received the inwardly-extending jaws 0r portions 11 of the jaws 12 0f the clamp 13, said clamp being provided with the horizontal portion 1a and depending portion 15. As seen in Figs. 1 and 3, these clamps are designed for use in the following manner: The inwardly-extending jaws or portions 11 are designed to slide in the grooves 10, and when the movable side 5 is in its vertical position, as seen in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 3 by full lines, the clamps are allowed to drop and their horizontal portions 14 rest upon the upper edge of the side 5, and their vertical portions 15 engage in the staples 8, and thus hold the movable side 5 rigidly in its vertical position, as will be readily understood.
The movable end 4 is provided upon one edge with pins or projections 16, which are designed to engage in openings 17 in the fixed side 2, and upon the other edge, preferably at a point midway between the pins or projections 16, with a pin or projection 18, adapted to engage a corresponding hole in the movable side 5 when the latter is in its vertical position. The fixed side 2 is further provided with holes 19 in horizontal alinement with the holes 1.7 and also in line with the staple 9, so that when it is desired to make a pack: age of less length than the length of the press the movable side 5 is turned down, the movable'end 4. is moved so as to disengage its pins from the holes 17, and the said pins 16 are engaged in the holes 19, and then when the movable side 5 is thrown upward into vertical position the pin 18 will engage the corresponding hole therein and the clamp 13 allowed to drop into the staple 9, so as to hold the side 5 rigidly in place, and thus form a compression-chamber of less length than formerly.
20 is the presser-board fitted between the sides and ends of the press and having near each end the pawls 21, which are pivotally mounted in any suitable manner, as upon staples 22, disposed at a distance from the ends of the board, so that the said pawls will incline toward the ends of the press, and these pawls are adapted to engage ratchet-teeth 23, formed upon the inner faces of the ends 3 and 4, as seen best in Figs. 1 and 2. These pawls and ratchet-teeth are so disposed that as pressure is applied upon the board 20, after the tobacco or other material has been placed within the press, the pawls engaging in the ratchet-teeth will hold the said board against retrograde movement. The press should be provided with presser-boards of different lengths for use in connection with the long or short chamber, as will be readily understood, a short board in use in connection with the shorter chamber being indicated in Fig. 2 at 25 and provided with its pawl 26.
The mode of operation having been clearly set forth in the foregoing description, further explanation thereof does not seem necessary.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed as new is 1. A press of the character described comprising a bottom, a fixed end and a fixed side, a movable side and an adjustable end and a presser-board cooperatively disposed with relation to said ends.
2. A press of the character described comprising a bottom, a fixed end and a fixed side, a movable side and an adjustable end and a presser-board cooperatively disposed with relation to said ends and means for holding the movable side in its vertical position.
3. A press of the character described comprising a bottom, a fixed side, a fixed end, a movable side, an adjustable end, a presserboard, means thereon for engaging the ends to prevent retrograde movement and means for holding the movable side in its vertical position.
4:- In a press of the character described, a bottom, a fixed side, a fixed end, a movable side, clamps vertically adjustable on the ends at their edges and means on the movable side engaged by said clamps for holding the movable side in position.
5. In a press of the character described, a
bottom, a fixed side, a fixed end, a movable,
side, clamps vertically adjustable on the ends attheir edges and means on the movable side engaged by said clamps to hold the movable side in position, the upper edges of the two sides being provided with cord receiving slots.
6. In a press of the character described, a bottom, a fixed side, a fixed end, a movable side, an adjustable end, adjustable means for engaging the movable side, ratchet-teeth on the inner faces of the ends, a presser-board and pivoted pawls thereon for engaging said ratchet-teeth.
7. In a press of the character described, a bottom, a fixed side, a fixed end, a movable side, an adjustable end, adjustable means for engaging the movable side, ratchet-teeth on the inner faces of the ends, a presser-board and pivoted pawls thereon for engaging said ratchet-teeth, the movable end having means detachably engaging with the fixed and movable sides.
In testimony whereof I afifiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY W. HELGESON.
