G. SGHILLING. CARPET STRETGHBR AND'TAGKER.
APPLIUATION FILED NOV.24,1906.

CARPET STRETCHER AND TACKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed November 24, 1906. Serial No. 344,916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gor'rFRnn SCHILLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Pierce and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Carpet Stretcher and Tacker, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carpet stretchers and tackers, the object being to provide a stretcher with a magazine hammer so that the carpet can be tacked down after it has been drawn in place by the stretcher.
Another object of my invention is to provide very novel and simple means for feeding the tacks out of the magazine tube.
Another object of my invention is to provide a separable chamber in connection with the magazine tube adapted to receive the tacks and hold them in place ready to be driven into the floor.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure l is a perspective view of my improved stretcher and tacker in use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on lines 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the magazine tube taken on lines 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on lines 66 of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on lines 7-7 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing A indicates a base bifurcated at one end and provided with downwardly projecting pins A on its under side adapted to engage the carpet and prevent the base from slipping. Hinged to the top of the base by a hinge B, is a lever B which is provided with an ng-led end B adapted to engage the base and limit the forward movement of the same. Mounted on pins B projecting out from each side of the lever B, are the apertured arms 0 which are provided with angled sharpened ends 0 adapted to engage the carpet and stretch the same. The levers are apertured adjacent the angled ends in which are mounted pins D projecting out from each side of a standard D which is provided with an enlarged lower end D having cut away beveled sides as shown at D provided with outwardly projecting apertured lugs D adapted to be secured in the slots E, of a pair of strips E by pins E which are arranged in the bifurcation of the base A. The strips are held apart at one end by a coil spring F and are provided with enlarged ends E provided with half-round tapering grooves E having an inclined side portion E the two when joined together forming a tapering chamber for the purpose hereinafter described.
One edge of the standard D is grooved in which is secured a magazine tube G which is provided with slots G, on its sides adjacent its lower end in which are arranged fingers H of a pair of arms H, which are mounted in spaced apertured lugs D projecting out from the side of the enlarged end of the standard D and are surrounded by coil-springs H for normally holding the fingers in the slots of the tube. The arms are provided with angled ends H having beveled ends which project outwardly over the chamber formed in the strips E and are adapted to be engaged by the tapering head I of the hammer I which is provided with a handle I mounted in brackets J, .T projecting out from the standard around the magazine tube. The handle I is reduced at I and is surrounded by a coil-spring I bearing against the bracket J for returning the handle after it has been forced downwardly. The lower end of the magazine tube G is cut away as shown at G and is arranged over the inclined side portion E of the chamber so that when the fingers are formed out of the slot of the magazine by the hammer head, a tack will be released and will slide freely down into the chamber.
The operation is as follows:The magazine tube is filled with tacks and a tack is placed in the chamber, the base is then placed on the carpet when it is desired to tack the same. The lever is then shoved forward, the pointed angled ends of the arms engaging the carpet and stretching the same. The hammer is then shoved downwardly on the tacks in the chamber which will cause the strips to space and allow the tacks to press through the same into the floor. It will be seen that while the hammer is forced downwardly the head engages the beveled angled ends of the arms, forcing the fingers out of the slot in the magazine tube, and allows a tack to drop out of the magazine tube so that when the head is released and is forced upwardly by the spring another tack will drop into the chamber.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have provided a very novel carpet stretcher and tacker and one which is very simple and cheap in construction and one which can be easily operated by anyone.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The combination with a bifurcated base provided with pins, of a lever mounted on said base arm carried by said lever provided with pointed angled ends and a magazine and hammer mounted between' said arms in the bifurcation of the base, for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a bifurcated base, of a lever mounted on said base, angled arms carried by said lever, a standard carried by said arms, and a magazine and hammer carried by said standard, for the purpose described.
7 In a device of the kind described, the combination with a bifurcated base, of a lever mounted on said base, angled arms carried by said lever, a standard mounted between said arms spring actuated strips mounted on said standard provided with a chamber and a magazine tube, and a hammer carried by said standard, for the purpose described.
4. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a bifurcated base, of a lever mounted on said base, stretching arms carried by said lever, a standard mounted between said arms, spring actuated strips provided with a chamber mounted 011 said standards, magazine tube se cured to said standard and a spring actuated hammer carried by said standard for the purpose described.
In a device of the kind described, the combination with a bifurcated base provided with downwardly pro jectiug pills, of a lever hinged to said base provided with an angled lower end, arms pivoted to said lever provided with angled pointed ends, a standard pivoted between said arms provided with apertured lugs, spring actuated strips mounted on said lugs provided with half-round tapering grooves, forming a chamber, and a magazine tube and hammer carried by said standard, for the purpose described.
(3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a bifurcated base, of a lever mounted 011 said base carrying stretching arms. a standard mounted between said arms provided with an enlarged lower end having tapering cut-away points provided with apertured lugs, strips mounted on said lugs provided with a chamber and a magazine and hammer carried by said standard for the purpose described.
7. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a base, of a lever mounted on said base provided with arms carrying a standard, a magazine tube carried by said standard, spring actuated arms provided with fingers working in slots in said tube, and a hammer provided with a tapering head adapted to engage said arms, for the purpose described.
8. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a bifurcated base, of a lever hinged to said base provided with stretching arms, a standard pivoted between said arms, a magazine tube secured to said standard pro vided with slots adjacent its ends, spring actuated angled end arms mounted on said standard, provided with fingers working in said slot, a spring actuated hammer provided with a tapering head mounted in brackets carried by said standard. adapted to engage the angled ends of said arms and a separate chamber carried by said standard adapted 4,5 to receive the tacks from said magazine tube, for the pur' pose described.
