HlTCHlNG-STRAP CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, Lnwrs CAss SKINNER and EBENEZER MYERS, citizens of the United States, residing at Catawba, in the county of Catawba and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hitching-Strap Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a clamp particularly adapted for use in' connection with a hitching strap for hitching a horse or other animal.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device for holding the strap clamped around a post or the like, and the device is provided with means to prevent the strap from sliding up or down a post or along a rail around which the strap may be placed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the device applied to a hitching strap on a post; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is a top view.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a post and 7 a hitching strap. The clamp is applied to the strap for the purpose of binding the free end thereof after it is placed around the post.
The clamp has a back or base plate 8, and a front or face plate 9 connected together by side pieces 10 to which the plates are connected. The base plate 8 extends beyond the ends of the frame, and said extensions are provided with openings 11. The strap 7 is passed through these openings and between the side pieces 10, and the device is thereby held on the strap and will not accidentally slip off.
The side pieces 10 have therein slots 11 which receive lugs 12 on the ends of an intermediate plate 13 which is thus movable up and down between the front and back plates. The adjacent faces of the plates 8 and 13 have projections 1% which serve to grip the strap therebetween. The gripping action is effected by means of a cam lever 15 which is pivotally mounted at 16 upon the face plate 9 and works through a slot therein, with its head bearing against the plate 13.
The back plate 8 has on its rear side a plurality of teeth 17 which are adapted to be driven into a post or the like.
In use, the free end of the hitching strap is passed around the post or rail and drawn through the clamp between the plates 8 and 13 and fastened by turning down the cam lever which clamps the strap between the plates and holds the same fast forming a tight loop around the post. The teeth on the back of the clamp may then be driven into the wood by a smart stroke of the hand or otherwise. This holds the clamp in place on the post and prevents the same from dropping to the ground and possibly causing the horses legs to become tangled in the strap.
The clamp is portable, and it is intended that it shall remain on the strap, and be car ried around therewith, so that it may be used to form a hitch on any post or the like.
WVe claim 1. A clamp comprising front and back plates connected together by side pieces at opposite edges, an intermediate plate movable therebetween and having guides engaging the side pieces, and a cam lever pivoted on the front plate and bearing upon the intermediate plate, to advance the same toward the back plate.
2. A strap clamp comprising front and back plates connected together by side pieces at opposite edges thereof, said side pieces having guide slots, an intermediate plate having lugs slidable in said slots, and a pres sure device mounted on the front plate and bearing upon the intermediate plate.
3. A hitching device comprising a looped strap, a frame through which both ends of the loop extend, one upon the other, the frame having a back plate with slots through which one of said ends also extends, and projecting teeth between said slots, and means to clamp the ends in the frame.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
