JEROME \V. ROPP, OF ELYRIA, OHIO.
CHAPE FOR HALTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,238, dated July 26, 1887,
I l Application filed January 28,1887. Serial No. 25,826. (NomodeL) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chapes or clamps for securing the web or cloth strips composing! the headstalls of halters for horses or other animals; and the object of my invention is to.
provide such a chape or clamp oftmetal aswill effectuallyhold the stripsof webbing or cloth, be easily and cheaply applied, and when on make a strong and durable fastening. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure I represents a headstall of an ordinary halter to which my invention has been applied. Fig. It represents the top or outside view of one half of my invention. Fig. III represents the bottom or inside view in perspective of the other halfof my invention.
Similar letters refer tov similar parts through out the several views.
A represents a metallic plate of the form represented in the drawings. In one end of same is cut the opening a.
b represents teeth in the edges of said plate and standingat about right angles with said plate. V 0 represents ridges or corrugations formed on the inside of said plate and running parallel to the teeth along the edges. I do not intend to confine myself to anyform of ridges or corrugations, as my plates may be constructed with diamond or other shaped points with corresponding depressions; but I prefer the form shown in the drawings. c
represent holes for rivets through each of said plates.
The plates A are used in pairs, and the pair is so constructed that when placed together evenly the teeth of one platefit or fall into the depressions between the teeth of the other, and the ridges of one plate fit into the hollows between the ridges of the opposite plate, and Vice versa.
The operation of my invention is as follows,
 together and the rivets headed.
to wit: The side pieces of webbing or cloth to a headstall are cut out the proper length, also the nose-piece, and crossed at their ends at right angles. One plate ofmymetallic chape is placed under same, so that the teeth along the edges will rest under and across each piece or strip of webbing or cloth. Then the other plate of my metallic chape is placed immediately over the under piece and rivets passed through the holes in the plates and webbing or cloth between, and the plates forcibly drawn The teeth in the edges of the plates andthe ridges or corrugations of same fitting into the openings or hollows of its opposite plate effectually clamp and retain theends of said webbing or cloth without cutting or injuring the same.
The opening a, with the surrounding part of the plate, forms a convenient and suitable place for securing the chin-strap.
By means of my invention I save the use of a ring on each side of the headstall, also the sewing and leather necessary to form an ordinary chape.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
 1. A metallic chape for web or cloth halters for animals, consisting of the plates A, provided with the teeth b on the two sides thereof at nearly right angles to each other, and the opening a, all as above set forth, and substantially as described.
 2. A metallic ehape for halters, consisting of two plates, A, provided with the teeth I), in combination with the ridges or corrugations 0, so constructed that the teeth and corrugations of one plate will project inward toward those of the opposite plate, all as above set forth, and substantially as described.
3. The plate A, provided with the teeth I),
in combination with the corrugations or ridges Witnessesr W. L. FAY, ALLIE E. BRUCE.
