Be it known that l, JOHN it. Zsnwen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alina, in the county otlllis, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in 'l`ie-llp Stands `for Mail; and l do hereby declare the following to. be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a tie-up stand for mail.

An Object ot' the invention resides in the provision of a device of this character by means of which the mail may be held in stacks during the tying up or the placing of a strap about the same.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a device which is adjustable so that it will accommodate pieces ot mail of various widths.

A still further object of the invention resides in the provision .of a device which may be cheaply manufactured, easily assembled and conveniently used.

JV ith these and other objects in view, such as will appear as iny description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims. l

rlhe embodiment ot my invention illustrated in the drawing includes a base which comprises a lower plate l and an upper plate 2 which areheld in spaced relation, at their ends, by cross bars 3. rlhese plates l and 2 are .made integral with each other7 being formed from asingle sheet o 'l metal bent bach upon itself. The uppei` plate 2 is provided, adjacent each of its edges, with a slot l, which slots extend longitudinally of the base and terminate short of the ends thereof. A comparatively wider slot 5 is formed in Specification of Letters Patent.

Secured to the Vbar at one end of the base and extending upwardly therefrom is a pair of inverted lll-shaped guides G which act to secure the plates l and 2 to the bar 3 and between which a space T is formed. Slidably mounted 'between the plates l and 2 is a. plate 8 to which a pair of Usha'ped guide members 9 are secured. which members extend upwardly through the slots l and 5 and between which a space l0 is formed, which space is in alinement with the space between the member 6. The movement of this plate 8 is limited in one direction by the bar 3 at one end ot' the base and in the other direction by the contacting of the guides 9 with the ends of the slots it and 5.

ln order that this plate 8, together with the guide members which it carries, may be secured in various and predetermined positions, l have provided the same with an upwardly extending screw ll which projects through the slot 5 in the plate il and which projects through a plate l2 which isslidably mounted on the upper face of the plate 2 and extends completely thereacross. The under face of this plate l2 is provided with channels 13 which ride upon the edges le of the late 2, which edo'es are sliOhtl raised above the plane of the plate. A thumb nut l5 is .mounted on the screw ll and when tightened is adapted to torce the plate l2 tightly against`the plate S so as to bind the latter 'in position.

ln using the device the plate 8 is adjusted so thatthe guides 6 and 9 are located the proper distances apart and the nut l5 is tightened so that the guides will be secured in these positions. A tie strap is placed longitudinally of the base so that it extends through the spaces 7 and l0 and rests upon the base. placed upon the strap between 'the guides 6 and 9 and the strap fastened about the bundle which may then be removed.

Thus it will be seen that l have provided a device in which the base is made of a single sheet of metal and which is so constructed that bundles of mail of various sizes may be formed.
