JOSEPH It. BLOSSOM, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-BAND TlG-HTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206.076, dated July 16, 1878; application filed June 13, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. BLossoM, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented Improvements in Bale-Band Tighteners, of which the following is the specification:
My invent-ion is a bale-band tightener constructed, as fully described hereinafter, so as to permit the bands on a bale to be quickly and easily drawn to a high degree of tension and secured.
0n reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional view, illustrating one mode of using my improved band-tightener. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing one form in in which the tightener may be constructed; and Fig. 3, a modification.
The tightener consists, essentially, of a lever, A, an internal tapering socket, w, and a roller, 1). The socket is preferably within a case, B, hung upon trunnionsi between prongs a of the lever, although it may be secured to and form part of the head of the lever, which may be made with a tapering socket.
The trunnions t' may rest upon the prongs or frame, so as to be secured by adjustable clamps e, as shown, thereby permitting the case to be adjusted nearer to or farther from the end, in proportion to the leverage which it is desired to obtain.
The device may be used with ties of various kinds; but I prefer to use a tie, X, consisting of a tapering case and internal roller, substantially as shown and as described in the application which I have recently made for Letters Patent.
The end y of the band B being drawn through the tie X, as shown, the prong or prongs a are forced into the bale, and the end 3 is passed through the case B back of the roller 1). The end of the lever is then depressed, passing freely over the band, and then raised to the position shown in Fig. 1, the roller b wedging the band, which is therefore drawn up and carried through the tie X.
Whenever the lever is depressed the roller in the tie will hold the band, while the roller 11 will become loosened and gripe the band at a lower point when the lever is again raised.
By this means considerable power may he applied within the limited space between the platens, and the operation being quickly performed by the attendants at a nominal ex pense.
Where it is not desired to force prongs into the bale or into holes in the bars or platen, the lever may be suspended or provided with a suspended fulcrum, t, Fig. 3, or may rest upon a fulcrum, t, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. l, and operated in like manner.
In order to release the band in the socket :19, the case B is provided with one or more openings, in which a cotton-hook may be inserted to pry it up, or the journals of the roller may extend through side slots; but I prefer to use a supplementary lever, 0, carried by the lever A, and constructed so that its end inserted in the opening or openings of the case will raise the roller. Any other suitable device may be combined with the lever for raising the roller or wedge.
I claim 1. The lever A, provided with a tapering socket and with a wedge or roller, 1), which automatically wedges itself between the band and the face of the socket as the end of the lever is raised, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the lever A, of the swinging case B, provided with a roller, b, as set forth.
3. The lever provided with one or more pointed prongs, a, socket .r, and roller I), as described.
4. The griping device adapted to seize and hold a bale-band, combined with the lever A, and adjustable to and from the end thereof, as set forth.
5. The combination of the lever, socket, roller, and supplementary device for raising the roller, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH B. BLOSSOM.
