To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES M. HERNDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Judsonia, in the county of White and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shackle-Bars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has relation to shackle-bars and nail-extractors; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side View of the bar. Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the side pieces.

My invention is described as follows: I make the bar 1 long enough to be handled conveniently by a grown person, and large enough to bear the strain necessary for extracting of a railroad-spike. The lower end of the bar 1 is flattened to receive the side jaws, 2. In the lower end of the bar 1, and in the under face, I cut a V-shaped opening, 3, the upper end of which terminates in a three-quarter circular opening, 4, for the reception of the circular head 5 of the shoe or fulcrum 6. The head 5 of the fulcrum exactly fits into the circular opening 4, and enables the said fulcrum to swing backward or forward, as though it were pivoted in said lever. The base 7 of the said fulcrum is as wide as the entire shackle-bar, and is provided with a row of teeth to prevent its slipping when this fulcrum is put in place. I then bolt on either side of the bar 1 a pair of jaws, 2, the front ends of which are circular and exactly coincide with the front end of the bar 1. In the front endof the said bar and side jaws thus constructed is cut a series of teeth, 9, to hold the spike. On the lower edge of these jaws 2 is a shoulder, 10, against which the front face of the fulcrum 6 rests, andwhich prevents it going farther forward. To the lower face of the bar 1 is attached a spring, 11, the front end of which rests on the upper face of the base of the fulcrum 6 and presses it forward. On the outer face of the jaws 2,

and in rear of the fulcrum 6, I bolt shacklebars 12, the bolt extending through lever 1. The front end of these shackle-bars are joined by a strong hexagonal or octagonal bar, 13. In the front end of the bar 1 and jaws 2 is a rod 14, which passes through the same and projects from either side and acts as a stop for the shacklebars 12.

The operation of this shackle-bar or nailextractor is: The nail or spike is first started by a claw-bar and drawn far enough out for the shackle-bar to take hold of it. Then the spike is taken between the teeth 9 and the octagon bar 13. The fulcrum 6 is placed on some solid substance and the lever is pressed down. This draws the spike up a short distance. The handle is then raised, and the teeth 9 and the bar 13 take a new hold, and the handle is again pressed down, and so on until the spike is extracted. As the spike is drawn out, the front end of the shackle-bar is allowed, by means of the swinging fulcrum 6, to move forward, and allows the spike to come up in a perpendicular line. Thus it will be seen that the nail or spike is drawn Without unnecessary friction, and not bent by the operation.

Having described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A shackle-bar or nailextractor consisting of the bar 1, having the teeth 9 on its front end, and in its lower face the V-shaped open ing 3, terminating in a three quarter circular opening. 4, the fulcrum 6, swinging in the said V-shaped opening 3, the sides 2, bolted to the said bar 1 and having teeth 9 on their front end, and shoulders 10, shackle-bars 12, pivoted in the rear of said fulcrum 6, with their front ends bolted together by the octagon bar 13, rod 14, passing through the bar 1 and jaws 2 and projecting from either side, and acting as a stop for the shackle-bars 12, and spring 11, secured to the lower face of the bar 1, its front end resting on the rear part and upper face of the base 7 of the fulcrum 6 and pressing it forward against the shoulder 10, substantially as shown and described.
