Description

J. EAGAN. TOOL FOR; TIGHTBNING BELTS, GIRTHS, &c.
(No Model.,
- No. 427.304. Patented May 6. 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN EAGAN, OF RICHWOOD, WISCONSIN.
TOOL FOR TIGHTENING BELTS, GIRTHS, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,304, dated May 6, 1890. Application filed October 31, 1888- Serial No. 289,653 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN EAGAN, of Rich- 'wood, in the county of Dodge, and in the State Belts, Girths, &c.; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof.
My invention relates to tools for tightening belts, girths, 850.; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my devicein operation, certain of the parts being broken away for the purpose of better illustration; and Fig. 2 aside elevation of the same with certain of the parts broken away.
Referring by letter to the draWings,A represents a lever having the fulcrum end thereof provided with a transverse head B, from which project one or more spurs O. Pivotally connected to the lever A is ahook D, the latter being preferably made of a single piece of wire having the requisitestrength and so bent as to have an upward and rearwardly extended transverse portion that forms the hook proper, and two longitudinal arms that come on opposite sides of said lever and terminate in eyes for the engagement of the pivot pin or bolt E, connecting said lever and hook.
In the operation of my device the hook D is caught under the buckle F on the belt, girth, or strap G, and the spur C on the lever A is inserted in one of the holes formed in said belt, girth, or strap for engagement with the buckle-tongue H, the transverse head B serving as a broad bearing for said lever. The free end of the belt, girth, or strap having been passed through the buckle is held in one hand by the operator, while with his other hand he actuates the lever A, thereby drawing the spur O and hook D toward each other and taking up the slack in said belt, girth, or strap. The buckle-tongue H is now inserted in one of the holes in the belt, girth, or strap, and, if found necessary or desirable, the operation above described may be repeated until said belt, girth, or strap is sufficiently tight.
My device is especially designed for tightening harvester-belts, and on account of the leverage obtained the operation is rendered very easy and certain.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tool for tightening belts, girths, 850.,
that comprises a lever and a single wire bent to have an upwardly and rearwardly extended transverse portion and two longitudinal arms terminating in eyes, and a pivot pin or bolt passed through said lever and eyes, substantially as set forth. 2. A tool for tightening belts, girths, &c., that comprises a lever having the fulcrum end thereof provided with a transverse head, a spur projecting from the head, asingle wire bent to have an upwardly and rearwardly extended transverse portion and two longitudinal arms terminating in eyes, and a pivot pin or bolt passed through said lever and eyes, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN EAGAN.
