SPECIFICATION forming part ox' Letters Patent No. 369,618, dated September 6, 1887.
Application filed May 27, 1887. Serial No. 239,564.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that l, ANDREW J. SONNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milltown, in the county of Crawford and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in HameCouplings, of which the following is a specication.
-My invention relates to an improvement in hame-couplings; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts of the same, which will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the lower portion of a hame may be readily uncoupled and disconnected from its counterpart or construction, and dispensing with the use of buckles. l attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im proved attachment, shown in connection with the hame. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the llames, showing my improvement in connection therewith. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of one of the hames. Fig. 4. is a sectional view on the line x x of Fig. 2.
A indicates the two portions of a haine, having the back irons, c, as in the usual construction. In one of the haines A a slot, A', is formed in -the face portion thereof, and in the edge thereof another slot or groove, ci, is provided. In the slot cfa lever, B, is mounted i and secured to a fulcrum-pin, b, which is pivotally connected to the 4hame by means of a pin, I/,passing transverselythrough thepin b. The upper end of the lever B has apin, B2, depending downwardly therefrom into the body of the haine, which is encircled by a coiled spring, b, which has bearing between the under side of the lever B at this point and the lower portion of the recess in which it is situated. This end of the lever B is slightly raised above the surface of the hame, for a purpose which will be more fully hereinafter set forth. The opposite end of the lever B is provided with a hook, b4, which projects down over the edge of the hanne.
Secured to the lower end of the hame is a wire rod, G, which is bent into such form as to provide aspace between the same and the outer (No model.)
edge of the haine. The upper end of this rod C is adapted to pass into the recess A', and to extend into said recess to such a depth as to permit the hooked end b4 of the lever B to pass over the same, and to be released therefrom by pressing the upper end of the lever B,which slightly projects above the surface of the haine, as herenbefore stated. The chain connected to the approximately-situated haine A is passed over the rod C through the medium of one of its links, and the two parts thus secured together, as shown in Fig. By this means it will be seen that a ready connection or disconnection of the two portions f the hame may be readily obtained, and which construction is especially advantageous when it is quickly required to unharness horses for many purposes.
The novelty and utility of my improved de vice being obviously apparent and appreciable, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, with a haine, of the spring-actuated lever B, mounted in aslot formed in one face of the hame-wood, and having its one end normally raised above the surface of said wood, and the wire C directly secured to the lower end of the haine at oneend, and the opposite end adapted to pass through a slot formed in the edge ofthe hame to be engaged by the end of the lever B, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with aharne, ofthelever B, mounted and fulcrumed in a slot. formed in the face of the llame-wood, and having a hook formed on its lower end, an actuating-spring mounted under one ,end of the said lever and at right angles thereto, and the wire C, directly secured at its one end to the lower end of the harue, and its opposite end adapted to pass through a slot in the edge of the harne and be engaged by the hook of the lever B, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREV J. SONNER.
