SNAP-HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,170, dated September 14, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS T. MoERoW, of Caro, in the county of Tuscola and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Snap-Hooks, of which the following is a specification. 1

My invention relates to snap-hooks designed especially for reins, breeching, martingale-straps, and halters, but applicable to all other analogous uses; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, which I will now proceed to describe.

in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 is a section through the line :0 w of Fig. 1.

A represents a metal loop, into which the leather strap is fastened. This loop is formed with a tongue, I), and a lip, 0, between which is left a slot.

B is the hook, which has a flattened and perforated end which fits between the tongue and lip, and is pivoted in such position as to swing sidewise by a riveted pin, d, passing through the tongue, lip, and perforated end of the hook. The tongue I) is made longer than the lip c, and is curved outwardly at its end to a position closely adjacent to the outer end or apex of the hook, and which lip serves to close the hook. This tongue is made in the form of a segment of a circle, so that the hook may have a slight lateral play without being opened. \Vhen, however, the hook is turned about its pivot through an arc of ninety degrees, or at right angles to its normal position, as in dotted lines, Fig. 1, it will be seen that the apex of the hook passes off the tongue I), and the mouth of the hook is then open to admit the entrance into or removal from the same of the ring, loop, chain, or other device to which it is to be attached.

This hook is of simple construction and cannot get out of repair, as there is no spring to break. It is, furthermore, very durable, as it will wear as long as the metal lasts, and it cannot freeze up or become accidentally open.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is" 1. The, combination, with the tongue b and lip a, connected together and provided with a strap-connection, of the hook B, pivoted between the tongue and lip so as to swing laterally, and having its apex normally adjacent to the tongue, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A strap-connection having a tongue, I), in connection with a hook pivoted to said tongue to swing laterally, and having its apex arranged to pass onto or off of the tongue, as described.
