STAPLE-EXTRACTOR.
SPECIPICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No, 356,697, dated January 25, 1887.
A pplirution filed September 5., 1886. Serial No. 312,523.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK Scores, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamburg, in the county of Freinonta-nd State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple-Extractors, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to an improved device for extracting the staples that secure fencewires to fence-posts. It is designed to produce a cheap and effective device for this purpose; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, that will be more fully hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings annexed, which illustrate my invention and its application, Figure 1 represents my device in side elevation in the act of withdrawing a staple from a fencepost. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the device, and Fig. 3 a detail sectional View.
In these figures, the letters A and B designate two levers recessed and pivoted together at their forward ends in a manner similar to the ordinary tongs or pinchers, so as to form jaws A and B, the inner surfaces of which may be roughened or corrugated, as shown. Across the rounded faces of the said jaws A B are formed grooves O, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
To the under side of the leverB, and at or near its forward end, and by means of the pivotal bolt 1) of the levers, is secured an angleiron or block, E. On the rear end of this block or piece is formed a lug or teat, F,which fits in a recess formed in the lever B on its under side and aids the bolt D in rigidly se curing the said block E to the lever.
To use my device, spread the levers suffi- (Xo model.)
ciently to enable the jaws to embrace the staple to be extracted, grasp the staple so that the horizontal fence-wire that passes through the staple will fit in the grooves in the face of the jaws and press downward upon the levers, upon which the block E will bear against the face of the post and form a fulcrum for the levers in forcing the staple out of the post.
The purpose of the grooves in the face of the jaws is to enable them to get a suificient hold upon the staples to withdraw them quicklyand easily.
By this device the staples can be extracted quickly and without injury or bending, so that they may be used again,'if desired.
This improvement forms a cheap and very valuable tool for use in repairing or taking down wire fences, as will be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In a device for extracting staples from the posts of wire fences, the levers A and B, suitably recessed and pivoted together at their forward ends, forming jaws A and B, the said jaws being provided with grooves extending laterally across their faces for the passage of the fence-wire while the deviceis in operation, in combination with the angled fulcrum-block E, secured to the under. side of the lever B, the said block being provided with a lug, F, fitting in a recess in the lever B, all arranged substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK SQUIE-R.
